The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering with Prof. Robert G. Kelly. The focus of the research will be the environmental degradation of materials in aqueous environments. The successful candidate, under general oversight of the principal investigator and in collaboration with industry and government sponsors, will utilize laboratory and field studies to assess the electrochemical and corrosion behavior of additively manufactured alloys, including analysis of samples submitted for analysis by collaborators. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the assessment of models to determine the extent of localized corrosion of these alloys. Additional responsibilities include managing laboratory facilities, performing measurements, updating equipment, developing procedures for operation and safety, supporting undergraduate/graduate research and fielding questions regarding procedures. The successful applicant will also participate in guiding students as well as helping to draft proposals, reports, and research papers. The following experience is preferred: operating electrochemical instrumentation with both DC and AC techniques, image analysis of optical and scanning electron micrographs, FEM modeling, and the ability to interact collegially with undergraduate and graduate students. QUALIFICATION REQUIRMENTS: A Ph.D. degree in Materials Science or a related field is required by the start date. Applicants must be familiar with most or all the following research areas: electrochemistry, materials characterization including optical and scanning electron microscopy, XPS, electrochemical techniques, STEM, and optical profilometry. Good oral and written communication skills, as well as attention to detail and good record keeping, are essential. APPLICATION PROCEDURE:Apply online at https://jobs.virginia.edu/us and search for R0083035.
