Job Profile Summary
The Manager of Capacity Operations is a key operational leader within UVA Health's Capacity Coordination Center. This role is responsible for managing and optimizing the day-to-day operations of Patient Placement (Bed Coordination Center), the Transfer Center, and MedCom, ensuring seamless patient movement across the care continuum. Working in close collaboration with the Director of Capacity Operations, this position plays a critical role in executing strategic priorities, supporting real-time operational decisions, and driving high reliability in patient flow.
Operational Leadership:
- Oversees daily functions of the Bed Coordination Center (RNs), Transfer Center (medics and RNs managing external referrals), and MedCom (EMT-As, paramedics, and communications specialists managing EMS/air/ground dispatch operations).
- Ensures efficient, timely, and patient-centered coordination of care transitions and assignments.
Real-Time Capacity Execution:
- Supports the daily operational rhythm and surge management playbooks, driving alignment across clinical units and key departments to reduce bottlenecks, expedite transfers, and optimize throughput. Collaborates with clinical leaders to align bed placement and transfer decisions with acuity, service line needs, and organizational priorities.
Process Improvement & Innovation:
- Leads frontline efforts to identify and address workflow inefficiencies, build standard work, and streamline communication pathways.
- Collaborates on initiatives aimed at advancing digital tools (e.g., Epic, Qventus, Flight Vector) and improving transparency of patient flow data for frontline and leadership stakeholders.
Team Development & Culture Building:
- Builds and sustains a high-performing team culture grounded in UVA Health's ASPIRE values. Actively mentors team leads, promotes employee engagement, and fosters continuous development through coaching, training, and shared leadership.
- Empowers staff to participate in shared governance, performance improvement, and quality initiatives.
Collaboration & Customer Service:
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with nursing, physicians, EMS partners, external referring facilities, and ancillary teams.
- Supports resolution of transfer, transport, or placement barriers through professional communication, real-time collaboration, and service recovery.
Metrics-Driven Management:
- Uses available reports and dashboards to monitor operational performance and inform staffing, escalation protocols, and service adjustments.
- Partners with analytics teams to recommend new or enhanced key performance indicators.
Quality & Compliance:
- Ensures team adherence to policies, protocols, and regulatory guidelines.
- Promotes a culture of safety, confidentiality, and continuous learning. Supports readiness for audits, accreditation visits, and performance reviews.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from accredited nursing program required. Master's degree in related field within 5 years of hire. Experience: At least 3 years of progressively more responsible leadership experience as a registered nurse required.
Licensure: License to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia required. Valid Virginia Driver's license required for managers with responsibility operations in multiple locations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Position Compensation Range: $74,922.00 - $149,843.00 Annual
