The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Setting the Stage

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking an experienced Interventional Radiology Coder to support the accurate review, abstraction, coding, and charge capture of Interventional Radiology (IR) professional services. This highly specialized position requires advanced knowledge of complex IR procedures, CPT and HCPCS coding, ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, modifier application, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and payer-specific billing requirements.

Because of the specialized nature of this position, candidates must have current, hands-on Interventional Radiology coding experience and must have actively coded IR cases within the last one to two months.

A Typical Day

As an Interventional Radiology Coder, you may:

  • Review physician documentation, operative reports, imaging reports, and procedural notes to assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes
  • Code complex Interventional Radiology professional services, including:
    • Vascular interventions
    • Embolization procedures
    • Venous access procedures
    • Dialysis-related interventions
    • Arterial and venous stenting
    • Angiography and angioplasty
    • Thrombolysis and thrombectomy
    • Image-guided biopsies and drain placements
    • Interventional oncology procedures
  • Apply appropriate modifiers and ensure compliance with payer-specific coding and billing guidelines
  • Identify and resolve coding edits, denials, and documentation deficiencies
  • Collaborate with physicians, departmental leadership, revenue cycle teams, and billing staff to support coding accuracy and reimbursement optimization
  • Maintain established departmental productivity and quality standards
  • Participate in coding audits and quality assurance reviews
  • Remain current on changes to CPT, ICD-10-CM, CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer requirements
  • Support backlog reduction, departmental coverage needs, and special coding projects as assigned
  • Ensure coding practices remain compliant with federal, state, payer, and organizational requirements

This Role Might Be For You If...

  • You're an experienced professional coder with specialized expertise in Interventional Radiology
  • You are currently coding IR services or have done so within the last one to two months
  • You have an expert-level understanding of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding
  • You're comfortable coding complex vascular and nonvascular Interventional Radiology procedures
  • You understand NCCI edits, modifier application, and payer-specific billing requirements
  • You're highly analytical and can identify coding discrepancies, documentation deficiencies, and potential reimbursement issues
  • You have exceptional attention to detail and take pride in maintaining a high level of coding accuracy
  • You're comfortable working independently with minimal supervision while meeting established productivity expectations
  • You communicate effectively with physicians, revenue cycle teams, departmental leadership, and billing staff
  • You make it a priority to remain current with evolving coding guidelines and regulatory requirements

To Be Considered

Candidates must have:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Active coding certification such as Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC), or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of professional medical coding experience
  • Minimum of two years of dedicated Interventional Radiology coding experience
  • Demonstrated experience coding complex Interventional Radiology professional services
  • Expert-level knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding
  • Strong knowledge of Interventional Radiology coding guidelines, NCCI edits, modifier application, and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to work independently while maintaining established quality and productivity standards

Recent Interventional Radiology coding experience is mandatory. Candidates must currently work in, or have very recently worked in, an Interventional Radiology coding environment and must have actively coded Interventional Radiology cases within the previous one to two months. Candidates whose IR coding experience is not current or recent will not be considered.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • CIRCC certification
  • Experience within an academic medical center, large physician practice, or hospital-based Interventional Radiology program
  • Experience coding across Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance carriers
  • Experience with Epic, 3M, Optum Encoder, or similar coding platforms
