Job Summary

These positions report to the Principal Custodial Supervisor. Under supervision, oversee employees within an assigned core. Assists the Principal Custodial Supervisor with the following: Performs monthly building audits; provides training and/or retraining of staff; oversees special project work; inventories equipment and keys; ensures equipment is properly maintained; assists in supply orders and locker inventory; reviews work orders and performs follow up inspections for completion of work needed; works with senior supervisor on performance issues; writes and conducts performance appraisals; conducts safety and tailgate meetings; provides back up coverage for supervisor and well as station coverage. Ensures equipment is properly maintained and custodial inventory is maintained. May assist other supervisors.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • High school diploma and/or equivalent experience.
  • Supervisory experience in custodial operations or applicable field, including recruiting and training employees, assigning and reviewing work, establishing expectations, evaluating performance, recognizing achievements, and addressing performance or conduct concerns through appropriate corrective action.
  • Experience safely operating and maintaining custodial tools and equipment, including wet and dry mops, standard and high-speed floor machines, square buffers, carpet extractors, upright and backpack vacuums, wet/dry vacuums, mop buckets and wringers, and electric or battery-powered automatic scrubbers.
  • Experience using computers and software applications, including Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel, and reading and interpreting technical instructions, safety materials, and Safety Data Sheets related to custodial chemicals, equipment, and tools.
  • Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, equipment, chemicals, and techniques required to maintain buildings with varied uses, including established procedures for safely handling hazardous materials and toxic waste and the ability to develop and conduct technical and safety training.
  • Oral, written, and interpersonal communication and customer service skills to interact effectively with employees and members of the campus community; respond to work requests, questions, complaints, and performance concerns; provide clear reports and instructions; and follow through to resolve issues.
  • Organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to independently prioritize and assign work, manage multiple competing projects, meet deadlines, maintain productivity, develop effective work processes, and respond flexibly to changing or unfamiliar assignments. Ability to learn and navigate campus building locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reading and interpreting technical, safety and MSDS documentation as it relates to the use of chemicals, equipment, and tools.
  • Knowledge of cleaning functions and related custodial techniques necessary to care for buildings used for a variety of different purposes on a large campus.
  • Knowledge and skill to develop and conduct technical training and safety programs.
  • Skill to develop creative solutions to general problems attempt unfamiliar projects/assignments and respond with flexibility to requests for assistance.
  • Knowledge of campus building locations helpful.

Department Overview

Custodial Services is a unit within UC Davis Facilities Management that provides comprehensive custodial support to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment for the campus community. The department is responsible for servicing more than 11 million square feet across approximately 1,200 campus buildings, including classrooms, laboratories, offices, research facilities, residence spaces, and other shared areas, through day, swing, and night shift operations. Services include routine cleaning and sanitization, floor care, waste and recycling collection, event support, and other custodial functions that support the university's teaching, research, and public service mission.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Flexibility to be assigned to work shift hours consisting of Day Shift (6:00 AM - 3:00 PM); Swing Shift (4:30 PM - 1:30 AM); Night Shift (9:45 PM - 6:45AM), including mandatory emergency overtime that may consist of weekend and holiday work. Vacation may be limited during peak workload periods. This position may require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present, including to clean in close proximity lab, animal and plant waste matter, radioactive waste, blood spillage, chemical smells, clean fecal matter from floors in rooms and public areas and to clean in close proximity to human cadavers or animals corpses. Must be able to wear and maintain approved safety equipment such as gloves and eye protection. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. This position is subject to completion of a Pre-Placement Medical Exam provided by Employee Health Services, given at no charge to the applicant.
