Overview
This position is in the Welding Engineering Structural Group at Electric Boat's Quonset Point facility. The group provides technical support for structural welding of submarine hardware and components while maintaining safety, quality, cost and schedule requirements. The Welding Engineering team also supports the multi-disciplinary manufacturing shops. Responsibilities for the manufacturing rep team member include, but are not limited to:
Providing technical guidance for the application of major welding processes (GMAW, SMAW, SAW, GTAW), compliance oversight for submarine construction documents (Navy specifications, EB standard procedures and design drawings) and construction problem resolution
- Shipyard support for both day-to-day and global welding issue adjudication.
- Investigate and evaluate new mechanized, automated welding equipment and provide production support as needed.
- Assist in major and minor welding evolutions at Quonset Point to drive quality and enhance production throughout.
- Serve as project lead on both in-house and externally funded development and process improvement/cost reduction tasks including welding equipment.
- Conduct on-job welding audits to ensure procedural compliance in various work centers at Quonset Point
- Additional responsibilities include providing expertise for major development / expansion projects, development and implementation of process improvement projects and technical review of construction methods, capabilities and sequences.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
- Minimum of 2 years of Submarine Building / Manufacturing Experience
- Structural welding experience
- Robotic Operation, Technician or Programming Experience
- Knowledge in areas of structural fabrication, steel cutting beveling, forming operations, semi-automatic and mechanized welding
- Must be able to read and interpret company policies, procedures, and manufacturing drawings
Preferred:
- College-level education or Bachelor's degree and higher
- Specific Experience with ABB Robots, or UR/FANUC (i.e., Vectis/Lincoln) Collaborative Robots (Cobots)
- MT / VT / RT experience
- Previous experience leading welding problem investigations and development of corrective actions
- Previous experience writing procedures, instructions or briefings
Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; must possess the ability to work in a cross functional team including all levels of Management
- Proficiency with MS Office Products
- Capable of interpreting robotic programs and instructions, work packages, drawings, ERs, and SSPs
- Mechanically and computer inclined
- Ability to work independently as well as being willing to lead team efforts between Engineering, Automated Processing, Operations, Accuracy Control, Planning, Facilities and Safety departments.
