Enterprise Strategy & Planning Senior Director

The Senior Director of Strategy plays a leading role in shaping the strategic agenda of Fred Hutch Cancer Center.The role leads the development of enterprise strategic priorities, frames major strategic opportunities, and guides early-stage assessment and decision-making on issues that influence Fred Hutch's long-term direction. The Senior Director serves as a strategic advisor to the VP, Strategy & Partnerships and the EVP, Chief Strategy & Clinical Growth Officer and works closely with executive and clinical leaders to identify and evaluate opportunities that support Fred Hutch's mission, growth, and performance.

In addition to leading enterprise strategy work, the Senior Director is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operation of the Strategy function. The role helps coordinate the team's portfolio, establish priorities, balance workload and resources, and ensure consistent execution across strategic initiatives. Working in close partnership with the Vice President and EVP, the Senior Director enables the organization to execute effectively while allowing executive leadership to remain focused on enterprise strategy, growth opportunities, and external partnerships.

A core responsibility of the Senior Director is supporting the VP in defining enterprise priorities by framing issues, preparing analyses and business cases, coordinating stakeholder input, and organizing the strategy portfolio. It also includes triaging strategic requests, partnering with the VP to determine priorities and appropriate staffing for complex strategic questions. Once priorities are established, the Senior Director partners with Strategists and the Transformation Management Office to ensure a coordinated transition from strategy development to operational planning and execution while maintaining visibility into progress, risks, and dependencies.

The Senior Director also works closely with Data and Analytics. The role ensures that strategic planning and enterprise decisions are guided by strong analytic insights, reliable data, and transparent performance indicators. The Senior Director prepares strategic presentations for executive leadership, manages relationships with internal and external partners, and supports organizational decision-making on high-impact initiatives.

The role requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work across clinical, research, and administrative functions. The Senior Director is expected to operate with a high degree of independence while keeping the VP, Strategy & Partnerships and the EVP, Chief Strategy & Clinical Growth Officer informed of major risks, opportunities, and recommendations.

Strategy development

Lead development and periodic refresh of Fred Hutch's multi-year enterprise strategic plan.
• Direct market analyses, competitive assessments, financial and operational modeling, and evaluation of external trends to inform strategy.
• Clarify problem statements, desired outcomes, and success measures for strategic topics brought forward by senior leadership.
• Prepare strategic recommendations and executive-ready presentations for the EVP, Chief Strategy & Clinical Growth Officer, C-suite leaders, and other governance bodies.
• Build and maintain strong relationships across clinical operations, research, business development, finance, IT, and other functions to support strategic thinking and planning.

Prioritization & planning

• Work with the VP to define near-term enterprise priorities and prepare the analyses required for leadership decision-making.
• Evaluate and size new ideas or opportunities and provide structured assessments to inform enterprise priority-setting.
• Develop business cases and value hypotheses for proposed initiatives, including financial, operational, and strategic implications.
• Partner with Data and Analytics to develop forecasting tools, dashboards, and performance indicators that support planning and strategy development.
• Coordinate the synthesis and communication of strategic information across divisions and departments.
• Ensure that strategic objectives are reflected in operational and financial plans through close collaboration with clinical operations, research, finance, IT, HR, and other administrative teams.

Collaboration with TMO

• Provide the strategic foundation that enables the TMO to translate enterprise priorities into operational roadmaps and initiative portfolios.
• Partner with the TMO Director to ensure a clear handoff from early-stage strategy development to execution planning.
• Support the TMO by defining key assumptions, success measures, and decision-making criteria for enterprise priorities.
• Review TMO-developed initiative portfolios and operational plans to confirm that they reflect the strategic intent and required outcomes.
• Collaborate on the development of the enterprise transformation roadmap and participate in leadership discussions about sequencing, resources, and risks.
• Offer strategic insight throughout execution as needed/useful, while maintaining Strategy's focus on long-term priorities and emerging opportunities.

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in business-related discipline required, preferably with healthcare administration focus.

• 5-7+ years' experience with increasing responsibilities in strategic planning and business development.

• 3-5+ years' experience in leadership/management.

• Experience advising senior executives and supporting high-stakes strategic decisions.

• Strong analytical skills, including the ability to work with complex data and develop business cases and financial models.

• Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage projects that involve multiple stakeholders.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create clear, compelling presentations.

• Ability to build collaborative relationships with leaders across clinical, research, and administrative areas.

Preferred:

• Master's degree with healthcare focus preferred.

• Previous experience as a consultant with a top tier strategy consulting firm highly preferred.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $200,158.40 to $333,569.60, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
