Primary Purpose of Position
The Transportation Supervisor serves as part of the Transportation unit within the Parking and Transportation Services department, with responsibility for oversight of transportation-related programs and services supporting the UNC Charlotte campus community. Among the list of supported services are Niner Paratransit, a point-to-point disability transportation service for eligible program members, including students, faculty, staff and University guests; Niner Transit, a fare-free transit bus service that transports community members around campus; a shared-bike and scooter program, intended to provide an alternative mode of transportation around campus; chartered, fixed-route and special event transportation, on and off campus; bicycle lockers.


This position supervises a specific shift's operations and staff, and coordinates the day-to-day activities - ensuring all program standards are effectively and efficiently met. Serves as the primary point-of-contact for customer service-related issues and manages account information related to the various programs supported. As the scope of work continues to expand, additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the Assistant Director for Transportation or their designee.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Job Duties

  • Supervise and lead staff on your shift to help ensure University and departmental standards and expectations are met
  • Manage employees' work time and time off requests in time-keeping programs: KRONOS, Web Time Entry, and Humanity
  • Ensure proper staff coverage is scheduled for regular work shifts, chartered and fixed-route services, special events, activities, and functions
  • Set a do-as-I-do by your willingness to perform any task that you expect of your staff
  • Create performance plans that enforce University and departmental goals, and review each employee's performance with them at the end of the cycle
  • Recruit, train, orient, and mentor new employees to set service and program expectations, including specific program information related to Niner Paratransit, Niner Rides, and Niner Transit, customer service, policies and regulatory standards, and other department-set priorities
  • Conduct disciplinary actions for employee performance issues in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Retrain and coach existing employees during incidences of poor performance to help keep expectations in focus
  • Serve as a main point of contact for our customers, both internal and external, and provide exceptional levels of service in everything you do
  • Monitor and track customer feedback to help ensure proper levels of service are being provided
  • Serve as the primary point-of-contact for customer inquiries, feedback, and complaints, and work with staff and department leadership to modify employee performance to better meet the community's needs
  • Attend University-led informational sessions like SOAR, Admitted Student Day, and other related department interest sessions to provide program and service information to campus community members and their families
  • Explain policy, procedures, and regulatory-governance information to customers to better set expectations related to the transportation services our unit supports
  • Identify service issues, safety-related concerns, and areas of improvement, and make recommendations on how to better support our customers
  • Inspect all Transportation equipment and resources on campus to ensure proper levels of service are available to campus community members.
  • Advocate and promote transportation programs through your professional relationships and dealings with campus partners
  • Supervise all day-to-day operations, programs, and services supported by the Transportation unit, including Niner Transit, Niner Paratransit, e-scooters and pedal-assist bicycles, bicycle lockers, chartered and special event transportation requests, bus advertising, and all other transportation-related services.
  • Coordinate with the operator of Niner Transit regarding operational changes that may affect the campus community. Provide direction to vendor leadership to help ensure service levels remain adequate for campus needs.
  • Assist the Transportation Manager with monitoring the department's preventive maintenance program. Transfer vehicles to and from maintenance facilities and other locations as needed.
  • Review and address all submitted DVIRs (Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports) and Vehicle Usage Log sheets to help manage departmental vehicle needs and report vehicle defects to the Transportation.
  • Conduct routine vehicle inspections to audit your employees' inspections and to help ensure vehicle defects and issues are being properly reported
  • Find, collect, review, measure, transfer, and furnish data associated with Transportation services and report information to PaTS leadership to help guide program changes that may better serve the campus community
  • Create and maintain staff employee files, both personnel and disqualification (DQ) for CDL holders.
  • Create and maintain employee personnel files. Maintain employee DQ files that comply with federal regulations for DOT commercial drivers
  • Communicate with employees, peers, supervisors, and customers regarding program activities and updates
  • Plan, coordinate, and participate in quarterly safety meetings for employees, and share relevant information with teammates
  • Review and respond to emails and phone calls from coworkers and customers in a timely manner
  • Document customer eligibility information and ensure dates of eligibility correlate with member access to services and programs
  • Make recommendations on policies and procedures that would benefit the employees and customers of Parking and Transportation Services
  • Utilize computer programs to log passenger transfer requests and dispatch service vehicles according to schedule needs
  • Monitor chartered transportation services; serve as a replacement vehicle operator when schedule vacancies exist.
  • Monitor inventory of employees' equipment, supplies, and uniforms to help ensure they are properly equipped to support the department's programs and services
  • Monitor signage and advertisement materials promoting Transportation programs and services to ensure proper messaging is being communicated to the community. Report instances where materials should be updated or replaced
