The West Virginia University Reed School of Media and Communications seeks a dynamic, collegial faculty member for a hybrid position who will combine teaching courses in the Reed School with recruiting, training, and supervising students who work with WVU Athletics on media operations and productions.

Primary Objectives:

  • Deliver high-quality academic instruction aligned with current sports media industry practices
  • Mentor and supervise students in live, real-world athletics media environments
  • Enhance WVU Athletics' media output
  • Serve as a liaison between the Reed School and WVU Athletics media operations

Key Responsibilities

Academic Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in topics including:
  • Live sports video and digital production
  • Digital media tools, including AI, for brand promotion and audience engagement
  • Sports video reporting, storytelling, and production
  • Ensure program curriculum aligns with industry standards and emerging technologies
  • Advise and mentor students pursuing careers in sports media and communications
  • Supervise internships and practicum courses throughout the year
  • Assist with planning and execution of annual week-long high school summer media camp
  • Participate in departmental service

Athletics Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, assign, and supervise students working with WVU Athletics on the following: (1) Game-day operation of cameras, switchers, replay machines, graphics programs, and scoring systems for live videoboard coverage or live ESPN+ broadcasts under the leadership and direction assigned by Athletics; (2) Feature storytelling and long-form projects to be used in halftime segments of ESPN broadcasts
  • Work daily with Assistant Athletics Director for Broadcasting to assign crew for all events. Crew includes both students in the program along with Freelancers employed by WVU Athletics. Ensure all crew positions are filled, including replacing members when previously assigned staff call off.
  • Assist in developing content strategies consistent with NCAA, Big 12 Conference, ESPN, and WVU Athletics' guidelines
  • Attend weekly ESPN content meetings to keep up with execution styles, promotional requirements, and storyline priorities, sharing this information as part of her/ his curriculum with the students, as appropriate.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Sports Media, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • Minimum three years of professional experience working in broadcast sports production.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, mentoring, or supervising students
  • Demonstrated experience in live video production, digital media platforms, new media tools and technologies, and audience analytics
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working within a Division I university Athletics Department
  • Prior collegiate-level teaching experience
  • Familiarity with NCAA rules and compliance standards

Reed School of Media and Communications offers a Bachelor of Science in journalism (BSJ) degree in 1) advertising and public relations; 2) journalism, which includes multimedia storytelling and broadcast production coursework; and 3) sports and adventure media. The School also offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in multidisciplinary media studies and an online major in integrated marketing communications.

Students intern at top regional and national TV stations, sports programs, newspapers and advertising and public relations firms. Students also have the opportunity to work for campus media, including U-92 (campus radio station) and The Daily Athenaeum (student newspaper). Many students also build their skills by working part-time at local media outlets, agencies, non-profit organizations and within programs and departments across the WVU campus, such as athletics and health sciences, as well as by taking active roles in one of our School's many professionally affiliated student organizations. As part of our commitment to the land grant mission, the School engages in collaborative hands-on coursework and special projects that benefit non-profit organizations and small businesses in West Virginia.

The School offers four master's programs, one traditional on-ground program and three professionally oriented, fully online options. The advertising and public relations program is accredited by ACEJMC.

The School encourages and supports innovation through teaching, research and service activities and has a strong commitment to service-learning and experiential courses.
