Work Type: Part-time

Nature of Work: This is routine cleaning and custodial work in an assigned City building or area, maintaining a clean, pleasant, and safe space. The work involves general cleaning of buildings, adjacent walks, and grounds. Work also involves keeping equipment in a clean, orderly, and functional condition. An incumbent in this classification receives direct supervision and work direction from a superior.

Education and Experience: (The knowledge, skills, and abilities above may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.)

Three (3) months of experience cleaning a commercial or public facility.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of, and ability to operate, computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, uses, and maintenance of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of the uses, methods, and maintenance of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with staff and the public in a friendly, patient, and professional manner, providing accurate information, consistent follow-through, and a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to take initiative and make sound decisions while following established City and departmental policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to learn repetitive duties quickly and carry them out independently.
  • Ability to climb, stand, walk, push, pull, reach, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, and lift continuously.
  • Ability to use thirty-five (35) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force continuously to move objects.

Essential Functions: (Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this classification.)

  • Sweeps, mops, waxes, and buffs floors and stairways.
  • Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
  • Cleans walls, woodwork, glass, windows, and window coverings.
  • Cleans and sanitizes water fountains and bottle fill stations.
  • Polishes metal, stone, glass, and wood surfaces.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, replenishes supplies, and empties waste receptacles.
  • Vacuums, dusts, polishes, and shampoos furniture.
  • Empties indoor and outdoor waste receptacles and removes waste to the dumpster.
  • Wipes down public computer areas and regularly disinfects high-touch areas.
  • Responds to requests from staff regarding cleaning or maintenance needs as they arise throughout the day.
  • Assists with the preparation of spaces for events, as directed.
  • Assists in setting up chairs and tables for meetings and special events and removing them afterward.
  • Performs minor maintenance duties and reports major maintenance issues to the facility supervisor.
  • Keeps the parking lot, grounds, and walkways clear of litter and debris.
  • Assists with outdoor maintenance tasks as needed, such as clearing walkways of debris or snow.
  • Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the dock area, including moving pallets of materials as needed.
  • Orders and maintains janitorial supply inventories and keeps supply areas clean and orderly.
  • Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license if working at multiple locations

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must be able to work flexible schedules that include day, evenings, and weekends.

Pay Range: $20.00 Hourly
