Service Assistant Professor, WVU School of Pharmacy; Clinical Pharmacist
Assistant Professor, WVU School of Medicine

This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment in the School of Pharmacy with a secondary appointment in the School of Medicine. The primary responsibility is to expand and maintain ambulatory patient care practice within multiple sites within West Virginia University Medicine around Morgantown. The practice focuses on comprehensive medication management of chronic diseases in interprofessional team-based care (e.g., anticoagulation, dyslipidemia, asthma, COPD, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, hypertension, tobacco use disorder). The individual also participates in population health and wellness activities such as developing medication use policies and procedures, creating and expanding chronic care management programs, and participating in quality improvement activities. The individual also has faculty responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research/scholarship, and service.

Patient Care Services

  • Develop and maintain an ambulatory care practice that includes, but is not limited to, the following collaborative activities with the patient care team:
    • Conduct patient assessments and comprehensive medication reviews to identify, resolve, and prevent drug therapy problems;
    • Formulate medication treatment plans;
    • Adjust medication doses based on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles;
    • Initiate or modify drug therapy using established therapeutic plans or protocols;
    • Discontinue medications that are no longer required;
    • Administer select medications and vaccinations as permitted by state law;
    • Identify, prevent, and document adverse drug events and medication errors;
    • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts, as appropriate;
    • Document the care provided and communicate essential information to other care providers;
    • Coordinate and integrate medication management into the patient's overall health care plan;
    • Provide other patient care services as permitted by the West Virginia Pharmacy Practice Act.
  • Provide education and training to patients and their families to enhance understanding, promote adherence, and ensure appropriate medication use.
  • Serve as an information resource for the medical and nursing staffs.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of primary medical and pharmacy literature.
  • Document the financial and humanistic outcomes of the services provided.
    Other Service
  • Serve as a member of School of Pharmacy and practice site committees as assigned;
  • Participate in WVU Clinical Pharmacy Department and School of Pharmacy faculty meetings
  • Attend and participate in other required School of Pharmacy activities and programs (e.g., faculty retreats, awards programs, Commencement);Participate in medical conferences and practice site meetings, as appropriate.

Teaching

  • Serve as the primary preceptor for fourth-year pharmacy students taking ambulatory care rotations as part of advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). In general, the faculty member precepts 1-2 students per rotation for up to 8 rotations (up to 40 weeks) each academic year, as assigned by the Office of Experiential Learning;
  • Teach in School of Pharmacy classroom and/or clinical skills lab courses for students in the first, second, and third professional years. Course and topics are assigned based on the faculty member's areas of expertise and the needs of the School;
  • Participate in the academic advising of pharmacy students;
  • Participate in teaching that occurs during daily patient care activities or clinical teaching to practice site(s) staff;
  • Attend medical conferences as time permits; provide occasional presentations as requested.

Scholarship

  • Participate in scholarly activities related to the faculty member's area of clinical expertise, patient care activities, and/or teaching initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other clinical pharmacy faculty, WVUH clinical specialists, pharmacy and medical residents, and other health professionals in projects of mutual interest.
Qualifications
  • Registered pharmacist with appropriate experience; licensed or eligible for licensure in West Virginia.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited residency in pharmacy practice (PGY1)
  • Completion of a PGY2 residency in ambulatory care, family medicine, internal medicine, or pharmacotherapy or have at least 2 years of related ambulatory care practice experience
  • Certification in basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)
  • Certification in Ambulatory Care (BCACP) by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (or other relevant board certification) is expected within two years of hire
  • A high level of clinical practice skills, enthusiasm for clinical teaching, and the interpersonal skills needed for interacting effectively with students, faculty, health professionals, and patients.
