Position Summary
Reporting to the Blood Bank Supervisor, the Medical Technologist performs a full range of routine and specialized diagnostic testing within transfusion services. This role is responsible for analyzing specimens, reporting results, maintaining instrumentation, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and advanced blood bank testing, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, antibody identification, and compatibility testing.
- Interpret results, evaluate specimen integrity, and respond to critical or complex findings.
- Prepare, crossmatch, and issue blood products in accordance with transfusion safety standards.
- Communicate results and critical values promptly to physicians and clinical teams.
- Perform and monitor quality control and quality assurance activities; investigate and resolve variances.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and analyzers.
- Accession, process, and track specimens using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Maintain blood product inventory and reagent supplies.
- Support compliance with AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, OSHA, and Joint Commission standards.
- Assist with transfusion services operations, including Blood Donor Room procedures.
- Train and support new staff, students, and team members.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives, validation studies, and proficiency testing.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.
- Promote patient-centered care, confidentiality, and service excellence.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field required.
- OR previously qualified as a technologist under March 14, 1990 regulations (CLIA '67) on or before February 28, 1992.
- In lieu of the educational requirement, ASCP certification is required.
Experience
- Minimum of one (1) year of blood bank experience preferred.
- New graduates from an accredited Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology program are encouraged to apply.
Licensure & Certification
- ASCP certification (MLS or BB) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of immunohematology and transfusion medicine practices.
- Ability to apply sound clinical judgment and problem-solving skills in complex situations.
- Proficiency with automated and manual laboratory instrumentation.
- Understanding of quality control procedures, regulatory requirements, and laboratory safety standards.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- High level of attention to detail, accuracy, and accountability.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional integrity.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in a clinical laboratory environment with routine exposure to blood and body fluids.
- Frequent standing, walking, and performance of fine motor tasks.
- Regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, laboratory coats, and eye protection.
