Job Description

The UMKC Conservatory invites applications for the position of a full time, unranked, non-tenure track, benefit eligible, Scenic Studio Supervisor at the Instructor level, beginning Fall 2026. This is a 9-month, 1.0 FTE academic appointment (40-hour work week expectation). This faculty member will assist in executing the scenic elements of all productions in the Conservatory's season, in collaboration with the Assistant Teaching Professor of Technical Direction. Workload also includes one course per semester.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Organize, plan, and execute construction projects in coordination with the ATP of Technical Direction.
  • Assist in the building, placement, rigging, and strike of scenery for Conservatory productions.
  • Instruct and oversee students working in the Scenic Studio, either through their coursework or work-study assignments.
  • Perform general maintenance and upkeep of shop machinery and tools.
  • Teach one course per semester at the undergraduate level in various areas of design/technology/production.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree
  • Professional experience in theatrical carpentry and set construction;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of scenic materials.
  • Expertise in shop safety standards.
  • Experience in welding, rigging, automation, and related entertainment technology also preferred.
  • CAD proficiency (VectorWorks proficiency preferred)
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
