Responsibilities

Job Summary
Provides education to an assigned caseload of patients within the disease specific population of obesity surgery and non-surgery weight management patients. The Exercise Physiology educator will provide patients with the knowledge to empower them to take control of their disease. The Exercise Physiology Educator will expand the patient's tools and skills required to lose weight and follow post op surgical protocols, maintain health and improve outcomes. This position will additionally update information provided to patients based on current research and evidence based practice. The educator must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients seen in the Bariatric Center. They must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age and body condition needs to provide the pre and post op care described in the center's departmental protocols.
Essential Functions
  • Serve as an ongoing consultant, educator, researcher and leader for the exercise components of weight management while overseeing and managing appropriate care delivery, documentation and utilization of standard protocols. Provide initial and post-operative patient assessment, education, and documentation of patients' individual exercise programs. Monitors and records the responses (vital signs) to recommend exercise weight loss program and progresses patient exercises according to the medical weight management policies and procedures. Provide instruction to patients and families, evaluates effectiveness and directs changes in exercise rehab plans when applicable. Communicate all exercise responses and plans to patient's physician for follow up. Work with physician and their staff to ensure effective patient care and follow through. Apply knowledge based on theory and evidence based research to clinical situations encountered through center visits, email, and telephonic interaction with patients, families and licensed care providers. Actively participate in multidisciplinary committees, journal clubs, support groups and service line education seminars as the exercise and fitness expert.
  • Research, develop, review and revise center exercise protocols and educational materials based on current knowledge base. Educator maintains current knowledge base of disease specific recommendations and treatment options. Collect, analyze and organize exercise specific patient outcomes data for programs interventions to produce outcomes studies and statistical reports for program treatment plan improvement. Review literature for pertinent exercise/ rehab information and shares new ideas, insights and information with colleagues. Promote utilization of research to provide effective and efficient weight/obesity management.
  • Actively participate in marketing and cross promotional activities of department to ensure that financial and other related goals are met. Offer ideas, assumes responsibility for task, and volunteers to organize fitness classes and community sessions. Adapt daily/weekly schedules to meet the needs of patients or fulfill obligations to physicians referrals. Contribute to the financial goals and success of the department by assisting in the scheduling of patients, developing new classes, developing marketing ideas to increase business to the center. Maximize downtime (cancellations) by helping with patient calls and other coordinator/ manager activities. Put goals of organization above self, facilitates cooperation between departments, and works with inpatient nursing staff, manager and administration. Adapt to new tasks and or changing conditions.

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science or related field - Required
Experience
  • 1 year experience working in Weight Management - Preferred
  • 3 years experience working in Exercise Science - Required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid and current certification in ACSM OR ACE OR NCSA - Required
