Organizational Unit Overview
Academic Advising Services in the College of Health and Human Performance provides students with information, guidance, and support as they pursue their educational goals. Our services include assisting students with declaring their major, changing majors, class registration, assisting with schedule revisions and providing advice on other academic related matters.
Job Duties
The Academic Advisor advises students in the College of Health and Human Performance on academic matters, guides students toward academic success, keeps accurate records, teaches freshman seminar, and recruitment. The Academic Advisor assumes additional responsibilities as needed, such as (but not limited to) registration duties, monitoring student performance, discusses study skills, and suggest campus resources to enhance student performance.

Job duties include:

80% - Advises prospective and current students about academic requirements and selection of courses using advising systems and technologies. Disseminates information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc. Maintains students' files that are updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary. Audits student records for curriculum, major and graduation requirements. Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements and advises students on appropriate actions. Coordinates communications to students regarding course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources etc. Monitors and tracks the retention, progression, and graduation of all students within assigned population. Refers students with academic discrepancies to proper officials for further action. Evaluates and maintains student records for degree requirements using academic evaluation system. Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress.

15% - Assist in recruiting events including Open House, Pirates Aboard, conducting orientation sessions for groups of incoming students, and virtual academic sessions.

5% - Assists in the preparation of special reports relating to enrollment and related matters. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Teaching, advising, and/or counseling experience in higher education; knowledge of college student development; strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and customer-service skills; strong computer skills; and ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
