Position Title: Phlebotomist II

Work Location: 810 St. Vincents Drive, Birmingham, AL (IOP - OBGYN)

Assignment Duration: 3+ Months

Work Schedule: 2:00 AM - 10:00 AM, Tuesday - Saturday

Work Arrangement: Onsite


Position Summary

The Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing a variety of assigned duties including specimen collection, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations in a fast-paced clinical environment.


Background & Context

This position is for FMLA coverage at a busy OBGYN IOP, handling a high volume of daily patient draws.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and record maintenance data.
  • Collect and store specimens following established procedures.
  • Explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Review and understand physicians' orders thoroughly.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes accurately.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify all test requisitions and labels for 100% accuracy.
  • Package and prepare specimens for transport.
  • Maintain specimen integrity by following temperature and handling protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Participate in annual department training sessions.
  • Handle incoming calls and provide laboratory results as needed.
  • Perform 30-50 blood draws daily in an OBGYN IOP setting.


Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state).
  • Minimum 6 months of venipuncture experience in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • 2-4 years of overall experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years of blood draw experience.
  • Experience with both pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.


Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Majority of the shift involves standing and walking.
  • Work setting: OBGYN IOP.
  • Functioning as the sole phlebotomist on-site.
  • 1 week of system training followed by hands-on training.


Additional Information

  • Full-time: 40 hours/week (8 hours/day).
  • Daily workload: 30-50 blood draws.
  • Required vaccinations: Hepatitis B, TB, MMR, T-DAP, Flu, Varicella.
  • Color vision screening required.
  • Hospital experience preferred.
