Summary

The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy's six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.

The Robinson Nuclear Plant Corporate Design Mechanical Engineering team manages the capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the Robinson nuclear sites. The team collaborates with other CDE staff to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet site needs and milestone requirements.

Have working knowledge of mechanical design standards and procedures. They will develop Mechanical engineering specific solutions in support of design packages for plant equipment upgrade projects; including but not limited to scoping and development of design packages for plant modifications; HVAC, piping design, heat exchanger evaluations and Hydraulic piping/tubing design and modifications, mechanical equipment evaluations and independent reviews of peer prepared engineering products.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes, which include but are not limited to, HVAC, piping design, heat exchanger evaluations and Hydraulic piping/tubing design and modifications, mechanical equipment evaluations.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluates alternatives, determines and presents recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
  • Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.

Basic Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience.

Sr Nuclear Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Background hydraulic analysis, HVAC, pipe stress analysis ASME B31.1 and ASME Section III pipe stress analysis.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.

Special Requirements

  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions

  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
