What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an Optical Engineer to provide advanced technical support with minimal direction in the development and realization of space based optical sensors. This support will focus on optical design, fabrication, and assembly; interpreting and translating opto-mechanical concepts into designs and fabricated hardware; documentation; and finished experimental systems. Other responsibilities may involve providing operations, testing, data acquisition/recording/interpretation and diagnostic support as required. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to contribute in the development of new techniques and processes, and in the improvement of existing ones to ensure the successful completion of a project.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop conceptual and detail designs of optical hardware for optical system applications
  • Identify, analyze and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex optical problems using individual creativity and judgment
  • Perform technical calculations and analyze cost effectiveness of design, schedule and materials
  • Use design, engineering and scientific programs on computer systems to produce supportive documentation
  • Independently design, fabricate and assemble complex optical hardware
  • Experience with optical raytracing software (e.g. Zemax, Code V, and/or OSLO)
  • Align with established ES&H regulations and procedures and perform duties in a manner that will not endanger the employees or other individuals, harm facilities or equipment or violate environmental regulations.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
