Job Summary (Primary function) The Animal Care Technician II performs animal care and husbandry duties, including the observation, and documentation of the animals and the physical environment. The Tech also supports general vivarium operations, including facility and equipment maintenance (including troubleshooting of minor issues), and documentation to support AAALAC accreditation. Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)
- Interact with service staff, vendors and distributors related to vivarium facilities, equipment and supplies.
- Assist with orientation process for new animal care and research staff, and visitors.
- Responsible for training new team members under the guidance of vivarium management.
- Oversight of internal animal health monitoring program.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.
- Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines; perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
- Receive, inspect, and put away incoming animals; ensure and provide for monitoring animals in each rodent housing area.
- Provide support for study-related procedures (e.g., observations, dosing, sampling), as needed and assigned by on-site supervisor.
- Assist with the safe and humane handling and care of various animal species as assigned.
- Maintain accurate records of animal health, operations, facility maintenance and support areas as required, and in accordance with AAALAC requirements.
- Perform general facility and equipment maintenance and cleaning, including trouble-shooting of minor issues.
- Perform daily cage cleaning and sanitation tasks.
- Perform animal care duties to maintain quality and health of research animals.
- Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily room checks.
- Review, comprehend, and comply with all procedures pertaining to the ethical and humane treatment of laboratory animals for research.
Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)

- Ability to effectively follow verbal and written instructions and demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, welcoming diverse perspectives and fostering an inclusive environment.
- ALAT, LAT or LATG certification desirable.
- Minimum of relevant laboratory animal experience in an AAALAC accredited facility, with a focus on skills and competencies rather than specific years.
- High school diploma, General Education Degree (G.E.D.), or equivalent required. Relevant experience or skills in the life sciences will also be considered, in lieu of formal education.
- Availability for weekends and holidays may be required on a rotating basis.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Required to perform tasks that may involve physical activities such as walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
