What this job involves We're seeking an experienced, highly skilled State Licensed Master Plumber to join our professional team in Mobile, Alabama. This position represents a critical leadership role within our plumbing operations, combining advanced technical expertise with supervisory responsibilities and customer-facing professionalism. This position involves performing complex plumbing installations, repairs, and system modifications while ensuring code compliance and quality standards on residential, commercial, and industrial projects throughout the Mobile, Alabama area. As a Master Plumber, you'll serve as a technical resource and mentor for journeyman plumbers and apprentices, demonstrating best practices and fostering skill development. You'll troubleshoot challenging plumbing issues, coordinate with building inspectors and other trades, interpret blueprints, supervise plumbing crews, and represent the company's commitment to professional service and technical excellence through direct interaction with customers, contractors, and building officials. Your day-to-day tasks will include:
- Installing, repairing, and maintaining water supply systems, drainage/waste/vent (DWV) systems, gas piping, fixtures, water heaters, backflow prevention devices, and specialized plumbing equipment in accordance with International Plumbing Code and Alabama State Plumbing Code
- Reading and interpreting plumbing blueprints, specifications, and construction documents to plan system layouts, calculate pipe sizes and capacities, identify design conflicts, and create field sketches and as-built documentation
- Supervising and directing journeyman plumbers, apprentices, and helpers by assigning tasks, providing technical guidance, demonstrating proper plumbing techniques, mentoring apprentices, and inspecting completed work to ensure code compliance and quality standards
- Diagnosing complex plumbing problems using systematic troubleshooting procedures and diagnostic equipment including video inspection cameras, leak detectors, pressure gauges, and testing devices to identify root causes and implement effective solutions
- Obtaining plumbing permits, coordinating rough-in and final inspections with building officials, ensuring all work complies with current codes, and addressing inspection corrections while maintaining positive relationships with code officials
- Performing material takeoffs and estimates, preparing material lists, coordinating procurement with suppliers, and selecting appropriate products and systems for specific applications and budget parameters
- Responding to emergency plumbing calls on a rotating on-call schedule including water leaks, gas leaks, sewer backups, and fixture failures while maintaining quality, code compliance, and professional customer service
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Regularly lift and carry plumbing materials, tools, equipment, and fixtures weighing up to 75 pounds; occasionally lift up to 100 pounds with assistance (water heaters, cast iron bathtubs, pipe sections)
- Stand and walk for extended periods (6-8 hours per day) and work in standing or crouched positions under sinks, in crawl spaces, and confined areas with limited clearance
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl in confined spaces including under sinks, in crawl spaces with restricted headroom, in attics, and utility tunnels while maintaining awkward positions for 1-2+ hours
- Climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and work from aerial lifts and elevated platforms at heights up to 30+ feet with appropriate fall protection; access rooftops for plumbing vents and equipment
- Perform precise hand and finger movements for pipe fitting, soldering, threading, and assembly work requiring grip strength and manual dexterity
- Work both indoors and outdoors in varying Mobile, Alabama Gulf Coast climate conditions including extreme heat and humidity (85-95F with 70-90% humidity), frequent rain, and potential hurricane/tropical storm weather
- Split time between residential properties, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions in various environmental conditions
- Regular exposure to water (including hot water up to 180F), wastewater, sewage, sewer gases, natural gas, propane, plumbing chemicals, and potentially contaminated water requiring appropriate PPE including waterproof gloves, boots, and protective clothing
- Entry into confined spaces including crawl spaces, attics, pipe chases, utility tunnels, enclosed mechanical rooms, pits, and trenches requiring confined space entry training and protocols
- Exposure to physical hazards including sharp edges and tools, hot surfaces from soldering and brazing, electrical shock risks near panels, slips/trips/falls on wet surfaces, and moderate to high noise levels requiring hearing protection
- Standard hours Monday-Friday 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM with regular overtime (typically 5-15 hours per week); participation in rotating on-call schedule (typically one week per month) for after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency service with 1-hour response time requirement
- Daily local travel throughout Mobile, Baldwin County, and surrounding areas using company-provided service vehicle; valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required
- Daily use of required PPE including ANSI-approved safety glasses, steel-toed safety boots, work gloves, hard hat for construction sites, high-visibility vest, waterproof boots and rain gear, respiratory protection for confined spaces, chemical-resistant gloves, face shield, fall protection harness, and hearing protection
Required Qualifications:
- Valid Alabama State Master Plumber License issued by the Alabama Plumbing and Gas Fitters Examining Board (current and in good standing) with minimum 5 years of documented experience as a licensed Master Plumber
- Valid Alabama driver's license with clean driving record (no more than 2 moving violations in past 3 years; no DUI/DWI) and ability to pass comprehensive background check and pre-employment drug screening
- Comprehensive current knowledge of International Plumbing Code (IPC) 2021 edition, International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC), Alabama State Plumbing Code including state amendments, and Mobile/Mobile County local plumbing code requirements and permit processes
- Expert-level knowledge of water supply systems, drainage/waste/vent (DWV) systems, gas piping systems, various piping materials (copper, PEX, CPVC, PVC, cast iron, steel), and fixture installation for residential and commercial applications
- Proven experience reading and interpreting plumbing blueprints, specifications, and construction documents with ability to perform pipe sizing calculations, gas piping sizing, and water supply system design
- Demonstrated supervisory experience directing journeymen, apprentices, or helpers and proven ability to mentor apprentices in the plumbing trade with strong leadership, teaching, and problem-solving skills
- Experience coordinating with building inspectors, obtaining plumbing permits, and expert use of hand tools, power tools, pipe joining methods (soldering, brazing, threading), and diagnostic equipment including pressure gauges and leak detectors
Preferred Qualifications:
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification (Alabama Department of Public Health or equivalent), Medical Gas Installer Certification (ASSE 6010), OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification, or Master Gas Fitter License
- 8-10+ years in the plumbing trade with at least 5 years as licensed Master Plumber including experience with large-scale commercial or industrial projects, design-build collaboration, and plumbing system commissioning
- Specialized industry experience in healthcare facilities (medical gas systems, sterile water distribution), marine/shipyard plumbing relevant to Mobile shipbuilding industry, petrochemical/refinery industrial piping, or hospitality/multi-family large-scale systems
- Plumbing estimating and bid preparation experience, project management training or certification, experience managing plumbing operations or department, or client relationship management for large commercial accounts
- Knowledge of specialized systems including medical gas piping, process piping, grease interceptors, water treatment systems, hydronic heating, fire sprinkler coordination, and building automation integration
- Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish), familiarity with Mobile area construction market and established relationships with local plumbing inspectors and building officials, or membership in professional plumbing associations
- Advanced certifications such as Medical Gas Installer Verifier (ASSE 6030), Backflow Prevention Assembly Repairer, Green Plumber Certification, LEED accreditation, or manufacturer-specific training and certifications
