Job Summary
#CA-DK Under general direction of the Learning and Development manager, this position oversees instructional design and eLearning development for UC Davis Learning and Development, Human Resources with primary responsibility for technical and enterprise systems training, including UCPath and HR systems training. The incumbent partners directly with subject matter experts, HR functional users, and/or technical staff to assess, translate, and synthesize content, workflows, and systems processes into engaging design concepts, driving development of interactive learning activities and related aids that achieve behavioral, performance, and learning objectives. Applying advanced technical instructional design methodologies and learning technologies, the role supports system implementations and enhancements, drives user adoption, to ensure sophistication in the identification, application, and exploitation of tools, methodologies, and creative processes to optimize communication, audience engagement, learning outcomes, and behavioral metrics. - Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Minimum 5+ years of progressive experience in instructional design and eLearning development, including full lifecycle project management from needs assessment through evaluation.
- Experience establishing detailed schedules for development in individual or multiple courses within a program.
- Experience with technical skills related to learning management systems, multimedia design, communication tools, streaming media platforms, and multimedia creative applications to meet unique and often "new" requirements related to online courses design and development.
- Experience in problem-solving requires analysis of unique issues or problems without any precedent or structure.
- Experience in applying adult learning theories and education methodology.
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering complex, role-based system training (e.g., HRIS, payroll, workforce management, or enterprise platforms such as UCPath).
- Advanced proficiency using industry-standard authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate) and managing course deployment, tracking, and reporting within a learning management system.
- Experience conducting curriculum review, providing training consultation to stakeholders, and administering LMS functions including course configuration, learner enrollment, reporting, and system troubleshooting.
- Advanced technical skills related to learning management systems, multimedia design, assessment systems, communication tools, streaming media platforms, and multimedia applications.
- Experience integrating multimedia and systems-based learning workflows into web based and blended courses, including leveraging enterprise training platforms and digital adoption tools.
- Advanced use of eLearning development software and SCORM-compliant content development tools (e.g., Presenter, Articulate, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Captivate, HTML CSS) and digital video, graphics, and audio editing software (e.g., Premier, Final Cut, Photoshop).
- Demonstrated experience using instructional technology for design and development of online courses and course assets, including producing complex online courses with enterprise-wide delivery and supporting system rollouts through role-based, scenario-driven, and workflow-specific training.
- Advanced knowledge of cognitive and adult learning theories, and instructional design frameworks (LX design, backwards design, ADDIE, Kirkpatrick Model, etc.).
- Experience incorporating ADA design and development standards for web-based delivery into online course content development.
- Familiarity with the concept of universal design. Knowledge of accessibility requirements within digital systems training and the ability to apply inclusive design principles to system simulations and technical learning assets.
- Proficiency in graphic design, layout and adherence to style guides.
- Skills and experience to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal.
- Acute business acumen and understanding of organizational issues and challenges.
- Familiarity with project management approaches, tools and phases of the project lifecycle.
- Experience working with non-training individuals to prepare them to conduct and/or produce training content including SMEs supporting system implementations, data migrations, process changes, and technology adoptions.
- Demonstrated success training adult learners through a variety of methods (e.g., instructor-led, seminars, workshops, webinars, and eLearning) including virtual system walkthroughs, sandbox environment training, simulations, and on the job performance support tools.
- Advanced oral, written, presentation and facilitation skills; ability to clearly articulate messages to a variety of audiences including those learning new systems, technologies, or enterprise platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Instructional Design Certification
- Master's degree in Training and Development, Education, Instructional Design, or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in short and long-term planning related to the development and delivery of learning systems and related platforms and technology
- Organizing departmental activities, ensuring completion of the program or project on schedule, and adjusting workloads accordingly.
- Represents unit in collaboration with subject matter experts in developing learning modules or aids
- Experience developing technical and system training within higher education, healthcare, or large, decentralized organizations.
- Direct experience designing training or performance support tools for classification, job architecture, or workforce planning systems such as Job Builder.
- Experience supporting enterprise system implementations, upgrades, or change management initiatives, including development of simulations, job aids, and adoption metrics tied to operational performance.
- Experience leading curriculum strategy reviews, advising departments on learning pathways, and optimizing LMS to improve learner experience and reporting accuracy
- Advanced knowledge of organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
- Knowledge of the SumTotal Learning Management System.
- Experience developing xAPI-enabled content, administering LMS/LXP system configurations, and troubleshooting technical training delivery issues.
- Advanced skills to write valid test questions for a SCORM compliant, web-based LMS.

Department Overview Learning and Organizational Development (L&OD) in Human Resources manages organization-wide programs and initiatives for UC Davis and UC Davis Health in support of organizational effectiveness. Initiatives include individual and manager/leader professional and career development, talent and performance management, staff engagement, change management, and strategic planning. L&OD ensures HR, HRBPs and HR liaisons have the tools and support required to work directly with their departments at both the academic and health campuses, providing expert consulting for HR initiatives such as performance management, employee engagement, New Employee Welcome and curricula to support the skill development and training compliance needs of their staff, supervisors, and managers.
