POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Canine Trainer will learn and utilize operant and classical training techniques from Trainers and Instructors to train canines in detection of explosives, narcotics, utilize approved training methods for controlled aggression and obedience training, and other materials as necessary. The Assistant Trainer will learn and prepare canines for operational missions to include acclimation into new and various environments.



RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Provide canine welfare and kennel support for all canines as required
  • Learn and follow established training protocols in accordance with statements of work and standard operating procedures
  • Will learn, then train and manage multiple canines through the training process, from initial training through certification
  • Learn how to arrange operational exercises in order to replicate real life scenarios
  • Effectively document canine training in accordance with company standards and directives
  • Properly utilize and maintain canine training equipment to include safety equipment for canines and trainers
  • Learn and secure and account for canine training aids, equipment, company vehicles, canine trailers, company assets, and resources
  • Maintain the cleanliness of training areas, company vehicles, canine trailers, resources, and facilities
  • Follow standard operating procedures when conducting and performing operational searches
  • Assist when needed in instruction of new handlers and trainers
  • May include Handler duties, which will include maintaining a canine team certification and prepared for deployments to contract locations if required
  • Travel of up to 35%, to contract locations nationwide
  • Other duties as assigned



QUALIFICATIONS



  • Three years of professional animal care experience required, preferably in a canine training environment
  • Canine certifications preferred, but not required, that depict previous areas of expertise with canine training, or a canine handler (detection) course with a certificate of completion from a credible, recognized canine detection course
  • Demonstrated experience in solving training problems with detection dogs
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with all levels of the organization
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time and multiple priorities to completion
  • Problem solving skills with an analytical thought process
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment

  • Must be able to lift and carry awkward items weighing up to 100 lbs



  • Requires standing for long periods of time in all weather conditions



  • Requires intermittent sitting, walking, running, climbing, squatting, stretching, bending, and kneeling



  • Requires constant use of hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work conditions can vary from a busy training environment to field work, both subject to frequent interruptions. Frequent work outside and in inclement weather conditions is required, including heat, cold, and humidity. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. Normal work hours are Monday-Friday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, however some extended or weekend hours may be required, and work schedule will vary. Travel may also be required.
