POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for measuring and marking the drill pattern for areas to be drilled. Holes need to be drilled to the correct depth and to the correct spacing and burden. The Drill Operator is responsible for collecting drill samples periodically on drilled areas and following the mine plan.

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Job Knowledge

  • Travel in/out of the quarry at a controllable rate of speed based on road and mine conditions.
  • Before any work is started in the designated area, inspect to ensure there is no loose rock or other hazards present that require attention such as close edges with loose rock that could be a hazard during drilling.
  • Ensure that areas marked for drilling where the lifters are to be placed is clean of rock and a level surface.
  • Inspect area for loose rock where drill is to be positioned. Do not position drill in high-risk areas and report high risk conditions to your supervisor and position the drill outside the high-risk area.
  • Check steps to cab to ensure they are free of foreign material and operating as designed
  • Maintain adequate supply of steel to operate a shift.
  • Keep all work areas including operator compartment clean.
  • Fuel equipment as needed and properly log all fuel required.
  • Complete preventative maintenance, minor repairs and service on equipment.
  • Perform related and non-related work and clean-up duties as assigned by management.
  • Always walk around equipment inspecting for damaged or loose parts.
  • Follow pre-shift inspection checklist (mark any problems with lights, horns, brakes, or backup alarm requires maintenance before operation).
  • Check service brakes by rolling forward and applying brakes (check clearances around drill before performing this check).
  • Indicate on equipment inspection sheet any problems with the drill (note any oil leaks).
  • Lubricate drill once a week.

Teamwork

  • Assist maintenance team as directed.
  • Provide and verify on the job training as assigned.
  • Provide back up to other drill operators and miners as needed.

Safety

  • Attend and participate in all safety meetings.
  • Enforce all applicable safety policies.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Promote safety among co-workers.
  • Participate in Behavior Based Safety program.
  • Must comply with company, state and governmental health and safety regulations at all times.
  • Report any unsafe conditions to your supervisor immediately.

Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must be capable of working any shift, overtime, be on-call, or work seven days a week, if needed.
  • Must be able to multitask with a strong sense of urgency to meet the customer needs.
  • Must be able to work well within a team environment and take instructions from management and co-workers.

  • Must possess the basic reading and math skills.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong record of attendance reliability.
  • Must know, understand, and observe all department and plant safety rules and maintain a high level of housekeeping in assigned work areas.
  • Must be willing to actively participate in problem solving discussions to establish root causes and improved methods.
  • Ability to consistently meet the production goals set forth in the budget.
  • Must be willing to objectively evaluate new and modified procedures in an effort to optimize safety, quality, and productivity.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Must be able to learn and demonstrate the proper operation of multiple pieces of equipment and effectively teach others the proper operation of equipment and best mining practices.
  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
  • Must be physically capable of accessing all plant locations.
  • Be capable of accessing all areas within a site which could include heights of 90 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working at times in covered environment but mainly in a mining environment.
  • The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust, Fumes, and Mineral Particles.
  • The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting.
  • Ability to lift up to 58 pounds.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma, GED Equivalent, or demonstrated skills or ability.

PREFFERED EDUCATION:

  • Technical training or AA degree in technical related field is desired.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous heavy manufacturing and/or mining experience is highly preferred.

PREFFERED EXPERIENCE:

  • 1 year minimum of experience.
