Job Summary

The Journeyman Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for the installation, assembly, and repair of commercial HVAC sheet metal systems on new construction and special project job sites. This role requires strong technical expertise, the ability to interpret construction documents, and adherence to trade standards and building codes. Work includes installing duct systems, air-handling equipment, ventilation components, and specialized metal products. The Journeyman ensures all systems are properly tested, compliant, and completed to quality standards.
This position requires the ability to travel throughout the Houston metroplex, as project locations vary across the greater Houston area.

Essential Duties

  • Read and interpret specifications, submittals, shop drawings, and building plans to determine installation requirements and sequencing.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment; actively support 6S and jobsite safety processes
  • Correctly use and maintain personal hand tools and PPE; assist with PreTask Safety Planning (PTSP).
  • Operate soldering and welding equipment to join sheet metal parts when required.
  • Collaborate with plumbers, pipefitters, and welders on multitrade tasks as needed.
  • Inspect structures and hanger layouts to identify potential obstructions and ensure secure duct installation.
  • Measure, mark, and lay out ductwork routes using levels, lasers, rulers, and trade tools.
  • Cut wall, floor, and roof openings using hand and power tools to accommodate duct routing.
  • Assemble and install sheet metal ductwork, fittings, and hangers using iron, steel, copper, brass, fiberglass, vinyl flex, and other approved materials.
  • Join ducts and fittings using screws, bolts, Scleats, drive cleats, flanges, caulking, solder, solvents, and welds.
  • Grind, file, and smooth seams, joints, and rough edges to ensure proper fit and system integrity.
  • Perform system testing, including air or smoke testing, to verify proper sealing and performance.
  • Install and repair HVAC equipment such as air handlers, VAVs, fans, and ventilation accessories; ensure temporary protection of equipment and duct openings.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Formal craft training preferred

Experience

  • 4+ years of experience in commercial sheet metal installation
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to operate lifts, forklifts, and other jobsite machinery
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, installation methods, and building codes
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to mentor apprentices and support team development
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with team members and supervisors
Working Conditions
  • Work performed on construction sites, indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to heat, cold, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and oils
  • Must be able to wear required respiratory and safety equipment
  • Must comply with all company and sitespecific safety standards
