Job Description

Join the Naval Nuclear Laboratory as a Linux Systems Administrator supporting cutting-edge High?Performance Computing (HPC) environments that drive critical engineering and research for the United States Navy. In this role, you will take ownership of administering, configuring, and optimizing Linux-based systems that power some of the Navy's most advanced projects.You will ensure systems meet rigorous security and compliance standards while maintaining exceptional performance, reliability, and availability. Your expertise will help shape and sustain secure, innovative computing environments essential to mission success.



As a key technical partner, you will:



  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and enhance system configurations to maintain operational readiness
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, researchers, and technical stakeholders to resolve issues and improve system capabilities
  • Strengthen system integrity through proactive maintenance and continuous improvement
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in Linux system administration within a highly secure and forward?leaning environment
  • Administer and maintain Linux systems within a secure HPC environment.
  • Deploy, configure, and manage virtual machines using VMware.
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement optimizations.
  • Develop and execute patch management strategies to ensure system stability and mitigate security vulnerabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with DISA-STIGs and other government security standards to maintain secure and reliable systems.
  • Utilize tools such as ServiceNow and What's Up Gold for system monitoring, incident tracking, and management.
  • Document technical processes, best practices, and system updates.
  • Collaborate with the team to improve system efficiency and security while meeting operational needs.


Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficient in Linux operating systems (e.g., Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Ubuntu).
  • Strong knowledge of BASH scripting.
  • Experience with Ansible for configuration management and automation.
  • Experience with other scripting languages (e.g., Python, Perl).
  • Experience with cybersecurity best practices and frameworks.
  • Experience with ServiceNow or similar IT service management platforms.
  • Understanding of ITIL processes for incident, problem, and change management.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and basic networking protocols.
  • Experience configuring firewalls, VPNs, and troubleshooting connectivity issues.

Pay Range
$77,900.00 - $119,300.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
