Data Center Break/Fix Technician (All Levels)

What this job involves

This progressive technical role supports mission-critical data center operations through comprehensive hardware break/fix support, ranging from entry-level component replacement to senior technical leadership and escalation management. You'll diagnose and repair server, storage, and network equipment while ensuring maximum system uptime in a high-availability environment. The position offers clear advancement opportunities from hands-on technical work through team leadership, process improvement, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering teams.

Your day-to-day tasks will include:

  • Diagnose and repair failed servers, storage nodes, and network equipment including component replacement (CPUs, memory, storage devices, NICs, power supplies) following established SOPs and SLA requirements

  • Respond to hardware incident tickets within defined timeframes, escalating complex issues appropriately and coordinating with OEM vendors for warranty support and advanced troubleshooting

  • Document all repairs, component swaps, and maintenance activities in ticketing systems, asset management databases, and DCIM tools while maintaining accurate inventory records

  • Perform structured cabling installations and repairs (fiber and copper), assist with server racking and deployment activities, and support site commissioning/decommissioning efforts

  • Mentor junior technicians, conduct quality assurance reviews, and contribute to root cause analysis efforts and process improvement initiatives

  • Collaborate with provisioning, network, capacity, and software engineering teams to coordinate repairs without impacting critical production workloads

  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Method of Procedures (MOPs) while ensuring compliance with change management and incident management protocols

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with server hardware diagnostics, repair, and component replacement in enterprise or data center environments

  • Demonstrated proficiency with server management tools including BMCs (iDRAC, iLO), CLI interfaces, and vendor-specific diagnostic utilities

  • Strong understanding of data center infrastructure including power, cooling, networking, and structured cabling systems (fiber and copper)

  • Experience with ITSM processes, ticketing systems, and change management workflows in mission-critical environments

  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure during outages while maintaining SLA compliance and documentation standards

  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in data center environments with varying temperatures and noise levels

  • High school diploma or equivalent with technical certifications preferred (CompTIA Server+, A+, or vendor-specific certifications)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related technical field

  • Experience with major OEM vendors (Dell, HPE, Cisco) including warranty processes, parts logistics, and escalation procedures

  • Familiarity with DCIM tools (Sunbird or similar) and asset management systems for inventory tracking and lifecycle management

  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals including switches, routers, and network troubleshooting concepts

  • Previous experience mentoring or training technical staff in hardware repair and troubleshooting procedures

  • Understanding of ITIL framework and incident/change management best practices in enterprise environments

  • Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure projects including refreshes, migrations, and decommissioning activities
