Description

The Town of Needham is seeking a highly skilled individual to fill the temporary assignment of Library Technology Specialist at the Needham Free Public Library.
This is a temporary position of up to seven (7) weeks, working up to 37.5 hours per week. This position will be responsible for assessing the security and integrity of all library technology and connected systems' cybersecurity risks and ensuring compliance with Town ITC standards and industry best practices. This position will work collaboratively with the ITC department in the planning, implementing, and modernizing protections to secure networks, protect data, and enhance patron and staff safety.

This position will also support the technology implementation needs of the Library's current renovation and expansion of the Teen Room.

Schedule
Monday through Friday 9 AM - 5:30 PM, subject to change, with the approval of the Library Director. Some weekend/evening work might be required.

Duties and Responsibilities

These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive:

  • Conducts a comprehensive assessment of all library networks, systems, and connected technologies with a primary focus on cybersecurity and system security.
  • Ensures compliance with Town IT policies and industry best practices, identifies vulnerabilities, recommends and implements corrective actions, and documents the technology environment to establish secure, sustainable operational support and ensure continuity of service.
  • Evaluates current and future library technology needs to enhance service delivery.
  • Establishes standards for hardware and software procurement and use to ensure compatibility, security, backup integrity, and shared resources.
  • Collaborates with library department heads to evaluate new software and align departmental needs with vendor solutions; and applies advanced applications and network support expertise to assess, document, and support the library's technology environment, conduct systems reviews, and establish operational support structures that ensure continuity of service and effective local support.
  • Manages complex data processing and network operations involving personal computers, servers, computer networks, cloud and online applications, and data management systems.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, modifies, and replaces library hardware and software, including but not limited to wireless infrastructure, access points, switches, security systems, cameras, and people counters.
  • Provides training, instruction, and guidance to staff on the effective use and implementation of software programs and library technology systems.
  • Serves as liaison with the Minuteman Library Network and external service providers on systems, connectivity, and technology-related issues.

Requirements

The following requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job:

  • Completion of four-year college degree program;
  • Four (4) to six (6) years of professional technology experience, project management experience preferred
  • Knowledge of general public library policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Ability to provide information and assistance effectively to Library staff while ensuring high customer service standards.
  • Skill in technology, including the application of office software and web applications in support of Departmental operations.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication with internal and external stakeholders including patrons of all ages, Library staff, and other Town employees.
