The MFE COE is a comprehensive college with disciplines focused on teacher preparation, counseling and human development, communication sciences, human movement sciences, career development, student affairs, and educational administration and policy. We place significant emphasis on graduate education with approximately 40% of our students at the graduate level, making us the second largest college at UGA with respect to graduate education.

Bachelor's degree in a related field of science

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in biomedical engineering or neuroscience research, medical devices, and interaction with patients.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Data analysis and programming skills using MATLAB, python, and/or other programming languages.
  • Ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot hardware with force and magnetic sensors.

Position Summary
We seek a highly motivated full-time Research Professional to contribute to an NIH-funded clinical study on stroke motor function recovery, and related kinesiology, neuroscience, and neurorehabilitation research in human motor control, skill learning, and recovery.
The Research Professional will work in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment across multiple departments and institutions, including scientists, engineers, physical/occupational therapists, and physicians. This position will provide invaluable experience for anyone interested in pursuing graduate study in the fields of biomedical engineering, neuroscience, kinesiology, medicine, and experimental and cognitive psychology.

This position has a limited-term appointment term which is expected to end 1 year after the start date. The position may be extended beyond the initial term, contingent upon continued funding.

This full-time position is benefits-eligible.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Knowledge of programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, and the ability to pick up various computer-based applications and data analysis tools, as well as troubleshooting hardware issues with sensors.
  • Ability to function independently with a high degree of self-motivation.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to interact with patients and healthy research participants.
  • Excellent communication skills to coordinate within and outside the team.

Programming, testing, and troubleshooting advanced devices for movement kinetics/kinematics assessment:
The Research Professional will work on developing and piloting devices for human motor function assessment and rehabilitation. The duties may include but are not limited to:

  • prototyping, testing, and maintaining testing equipment for human upper extremity motor function assessment
  • assembling hardware and troubleshooting electronic issues
  • developing, implementing, and testing the communication environment between hardware and software
  • testing the functionality of the system

Assisting the design and implementation of behavioral and neurophysiology experiments on human dexterous movements:

  • participating in design of human psychophysical experiments
  • programming human-subject experiments with Python, MATLAB, C++
  • maintaining and troubleshooting testing equipment

Assisting data analysis, manuscript and grant proposal preparation:
The Research Professional will participate in an essential step in scientific research, manuscript preparation, which may include but is not limited to:

  • collecting, analyzing, and reporting data using MATLAB, Python, and other software and computational tools

  • participating in manuscript preparation if desired, but not required

Assisting with patient recruitment and scheduling:
The Research Professional will assist with stroke patient recruitment, scheduling of testing sessions, and coordinating with team members for data collection.

The Research Professional will assist with drafting and maintaining IRB protocols, and working with UGA research administration for IRB-related issues.

The Research Professional will assist with standard neurological behavioral exams to assess patients' (e.g. stroke, Parkinson's Disease, dystonia) motor and cognitive functions.
