Project/Unit Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking a highly skilled Engineer and Operations Subject Matter Expert to support the Dynamic Mission Replanning (DMR) program within the Department of the Air Force (DAF) PEO C3BM (Program Executive Office - Command, Control, Communications, and Battle Management) Operational Response Team (ORT) at Nellis Air Force Base, NV. This role involves engineering solutions to enhance operational capabilities, focusing on multi-domain mission planning, battle management system engineering, interfacing with edge communications and computing systems, and other advancing technologies in the context of long-range kill chains and similar missions.

The selected candidate will work closely with the sponsor and other stakeholders to design, develop, and implement cutting-edge engineering projects that enable Dynamic Mission Replanning capabilities in real-time, contested environments. Their contributions will directly impact critical Air Force priorities by integrating advanced system architectures and prototypes into multi-domain battle management operations.


Job Purpose

The Systems Engineer oversees and coordinates the work of technical teams on systems projects, ensuring the successful design, implementation, operation, and technical management of those projects. Taking a holistic approach to systems engineering, the Systems Engineer ensures that all aspects of a system project are considered and addressed. The Systems Engineer works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and then develops and documents technical requirements that meet those needs. The Systems Engineer leads the design team in developing a system architecture that meets all of the requirements. After the system is designed, the Systems Engineer oversees the implementation of the system, working with the implementation team to ensure that it meets all of the requirements. Once the system is deployed, the Systems Engineer manages the technical aspects of the system, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting problems, and making improvements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all technical aspects of product or system design and strategic architecture including directing multiple lab resources for large scale product or system deployments - Manage sub-contractor resources supporting all system engineering areas (definition, requirements analysis, architecture roadmaps, synthesis, systems analysis and implementation)
  • Conduct product or system design synthesis translating requirements into physical architectures for systems of high complexity to include defining and refining internal and external interfaces
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes
  • Direct teams to implement, document, and maintain the products' architecture roadmaps, designs, procedures, standards, and metrics, as well as ensure compliance and conformity of software architecture and technology standardsCo
  • Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final report deliverables
  • Serve as a resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for systems engineering tools and technologies


Additional Responsibilities

Systems Engineering and Architecture Development:

Design and implement System-of-Systems (SoS) mission planning architectures to meet joint force and Air Force operational objectives.
Lead the development of C3BM Theater Air Planning Systems to support real-time dynamic mission adaptation across multiple programs and domains (air, space, cyber).
Engineer fault-tolerant and modular systems capable of supporting evolving mission requirements.

Dynamic Mission Replanning (DMR):

Integrate, support the integration of, and/or evaluate advanced technologies, including machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and sensor fusion, into adaptable mission planning systems.
Provide engineering and operations SME support for real-time mission changes based on combat scenarios and sensor/network updates in contested environments.
Conduct quantitative performance analyses of mission planning systems to ensure efficiency, resilience, and operational impact.

System Integration for Multi-Domain Operations:

Collaborate with Air Force engineering teams and stakeholders to advance sponsorship mission threads and increase interoperability of joint systems.
Integrate 4th- and 5th-generation aircraft, non-kinetic solutions, and high-end technological capabilities into broader engineering solutions.
Work closely with Combatant Command (COCOM) operational representatives to ensure solutions align with mission needs.

Experimentation and Deployment Activities:

Lead technical experiments to prototype, test, and refine critical mission engineering solutions.
Engineer live-virtual-constructive (LVC) environments to replicate combat scenarios supporting training, operational validation, and system experimentation.
Analyze data from experiments and tests and deliver actionable solutions integrated into Air Force operational workflows.


Required Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (any general or specific subspecialty)
Master's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Science, or a related field.

Technical and Operational Expertise:

20+ years in operational and engineering roles, particularly focused on Dynamic Mission Replanning, C3BM systems, and multi-domain battle management.
Proven experience engineering System-of-Systems frameworks aligned to Air Force battle management systems, including work on Theater Air Planning initiatives.
Expertise in 4th- and 5th-generation aerospace platforms (e.g., F-35, F-15E, F-16) and their integration into advanced battle management workflows.
Hands-on experience with Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) environments, threat modeling, and adversary replication in operational test contexts.

Clearance and Certifications:

Top Secret/SCI clearance (active or eligible, most recent investigation dated January 2019).
Command Pilot Certification with 2,000+ flight hours, including combat and instructor hours, is highly desirable.
Graduate of the US Air Force Weapons Instructor Course or US Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program is highly desirable.

  • 9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Science, or a related field

Clearance Type Required
