Brief Description of Class
Licensed health care practitioners provide direct nursing care to individuals in a variety of settings under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider, in accordance with Article 139 of the Education Law. Practitioners perform nursing care tasks and procedures consistent with individual treatment plans; administer medications as prescribed; observe and report individuals' responses to treatment and changes in health status; attend to individuals' personal needs, such as activities of daily living and hygiene tasks; and provide emotional support and health teaching to individuals. Positions are classified in various State agencies. "Individual" refers to a person who is being treated or cared for, and is used in place of patient, client, or other nomenclature specific to an agency. Distinguishing Characteristics Under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider, practitioners provide direct nursing care to individuals in accordance with Article 139 of the Education Law; and may supervise the activities of unlicensed direct care staff. Minimum Qualifications Open Competitive: Eligible for or possession of a license and current registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.
