Position Summary



The Field Service Marine Engine Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and overhauling Caterpillar marine engines and related systems in the field. This role primarily supports customers operating towboats, dredges, and other marine vessels and requires the ability to work independently at customer locations, onboard vessels, and in active marine environments.



Key Responsibilities



  • Perform field service diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on Caterpillar marine engines, generators, propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment
  • Respond to service calls at customer vessels, docks, shipyards, and marine job sites
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic control systems in onboard and dockside environments
  • Use CAT Electronic Technician (ET) for diagnostics, calibrations, and software updates
  • Conduct in-field inspections, overhauls, commissioning, and sea trials
  • Provide technical support and recommendations directly to customers in the field
  • Accurately complete field service reports, work orders, and service documentation
  • Maintain and operate a company-provided field service truck, tools, and diagnostic equipment
  • Follow all safety protocols when working aboard vessels, in confined spaces, and around water
  • Travel is required, including occasional overnight stays and emergency call-outs

Requirements
Required Qualifications


  • 3+ years of experience as a field service technician on marine engines.
  • Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting diesel engines and electrical systems in the field.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision at customer sites.
  • Experience working aboard towboats, dredges, or similar marine vessels.
  • Proficiency using diagnostic tools, laptops, and service software.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to adapt to changing job conditions, weather, and work environment.


Preferred Qualifications



  • 5+ years of experience as a marine vessel engines.
  • Strong knowledge of Caterpillar diesel engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, and electrical diagnostics.
  • Experience working on vessels such as towboats, dredges, or similar marine equipment.
  • CAT ET certification or factory training.
  • Experience with marine propulsion systems, transmissions, and generators.
  • Familiarity with Coast Guard or marine compliance standards.


Physical & Work Requirements



  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in engine rooms, and stand for extended periods
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, or emergency calls as needed
