Job Description

The Certified Welder/Fabricator performs skilled welding, fabrication, and assembly on ductile iron pipe, flanges, and components ranging from 3" to 48" in diameter. Work includes welding cast iron to cast iron and steel to cast iron using both stick (SMAW) and wire-fed (GMAW/FCAW) processes, along with cutting, grinding, drilling, and tapping operations. The role requires precision, self-inspection, and adherence to welding codes and company standards for safety, quality, and performance. Makes quality checks of own work. Performs other duties as directed. Keeps work area clean and neat. This position requires the employee to work a full-time schedule with some overtime as necessary. Attendance is a key component of this position.

Planning:

  • Set up, operate, and maintain welding equipment for stick (SMAW) and wire-fed (FCAW/GMAW) welding processes.
  • Weld cast iron to cast iron, steel to iron, and other approved combinations following established procedures.
  • Perform fillet, groove, and butt-type welds on joints, collars, rings, flanges, and couplings.
  • Use proper preheat and post-weld cooling techniques for ductile and cast iron materials.
  • Weld in multiple positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) on various thicknesses and shapes.
  • Fabricate, fit, and position components for welding including TR flex pipe, wall collars, weld-on-bosses thread-o-lets, MJ joints, and flanged welded outlets.
  • Drill and tap pipe and flanges to specification using approved gauges and tools.
  • Cut, bevel, and grind pipe sections per traveler or specification book.
  • Assemble and weld custom or experimental products, including TR, Tyton, and earthquake joints.
  • Perform visual inspections of all welds and finished products for conformity, bead quality, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Conduct air and pressure testing using test tanks, blind flanges, and caps.
  • Identify and repair weld or casting defects through grinding and rework procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with company Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and maintain proper documentation.
  • Follow all hot work safety protocols and OSHA safety regulations, including PPE use and ventilation requirements.
  • Handle and position pipe and flanges using cranes, hoists, and lifting devices.
  • Maintain welding equipment, gauges, and consumables, report issues promptly.
  • Document inspection results and tag completed welds as required by company standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Action:

- Work in a physically demanding, loud industrial manufacturing environment

- Frequent lifting/pushing/pulling/carrying up to 40 pounds

- Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and standing for long periods

-Ability to lift and handle heavy materials using hoists and cranes

-Must tolerate heat, dust, and noise typical of an industrial manufacturing environment

- Welding units (stick, robotic), grinders, drills, tapping tools, saws, air testing equipment, bridge and jib cranes, fume collection systems, and hand tools

Qualifications

Team members who will support our McWane Way Culture. Team members will work together to make a quality product. High school diploma or equivalent. Certified welder credentials (AWS, API, or equivalent) required. Two or more years of experience in welding, fabrication, or pipe assembly preferred. Prior experience welding ductile iron, cast iron, and steel components strongly preferred.

Additional Information
