Primary Function

This position is part of the leadership team at Chicago Silicates while collaborating and supporting the other silicate sites. The position fulfills its responsibilities by performing engineering work with minimal supervision at a high level of expertise in the process, reliability, or project engineering disciplines.

Essential Functions

Functions that must be performed in order to fulfill Primary Function stated above include:

Plant Engineer (Process and Reliability)

  • Maintain protection of the environment and the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the communities in which we operate and/or transport our products as our highest priority.
  • Provides engineering support to the Chicago and other silicate sites.
  • Support the plant in daily troubleshooting and provide engineering solutions to the problems.
  • Become a Subject Matter Expert in an area needed. As the expert, you will be the go to person for all of the silicate sites.
  • Learn the process and equipment and be a technical resource for production. Work closely with Divisional Engineers and other members of Silicates Leadership to develop process improvements in the Division.
  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new employees. Be part of the qualification process for operators.
  • Responsible for the organization and use of the Process Safety Information at the site.
  • Responsible for updating the critical success factors monthly.
  • Responsible for understanding the usage factors and other metrics.
  • Provide technical expertise to reduce manufacturing costs and improve process reliability and product quality. Participate in the identification, design and implementation of equipment and process improvements, material of construction improvements, reliability improvements and efficiency and cost control improvements.
  • Work with outside resources (R&D, contractors, corporate engineering, etc.) to meet plant issues and expectations.
  • Uses the MOC process to execute changes which could include initiating, reviewing, and approving MOCs.
  • Acts as an MOC Coordinator.
  • Conducts operation and performance reviews of process equipment and makes recommendations for reducing operating costs and improving efficiencies. Fully participates in the PIP program.
  • Communicates oral and written technical documents, recommendations and other technical issues in a manner that is timely, concise, factual and thorough.
  • Troubleshoots major/repetitive process equipment problems.
  • Provides both process and detail design engineering on small, well-defined capital projects.
  • Develops operating procedures in accordance with standards.
  • Serves as trained and qualified backup for the Operation Supervisor.
  • Conducts safety meetings, job observations, and planned inspections per requirements. Facilitates and participates in RCFA meetings.
  • Actively pursues methods to reduce waste generation. Adheres to the guidelines of Oxy's long range environmental plan.
  • Manages the process safety program to comply with OSHA and ISO standards.
  • Reviews all process engineering studies and investigations to ensure technical support is provided for plant concerns.
  • Reviews and approves all conceptual changes for plant process modifications.
  • Reviews and approves all manufacturing procedure changes.
  • Develops detailed process designs and approves final process design packages.
  • Participates in department, site, and business-wide activities such as:
    • Assists in preparation of annual Chicago and other Silicates Plant budget
    • Participants in the site cost management meetings
    • Develops training modules for operations
    • Assesses the feasibility of new products
    • Assists the site personnel in resolving customer issues
    • Assists operations in resolving process, equipment, quality issues; etc.
  • Actively support and participate on teams or in programs to continuously improve plant operations.
  • Must be able to work with others in a self-directed workforce environment. Teamwork is an essential competency.
  • Employee may perform other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
  • Actively support plant and corporate HESS safety programs, objectives, and expectations.
  • Supports the Food Safety Program and Quality Program. Adheres to FDA requirements.

Project Engineering

  • Provide attention to detail, and dedication to work in order to ensure reliability of the work site as well as high quality product.
  • Ensure that yourself and others are respected, supported and encouraged to grow and succeed in their job.
  • Manages the design, procurement, and installation of the Ludington Site's capital projects within assigned scope.
  • Directs the efforts of other engineers and designer/drafters toward completion of assigned projects.
  • Fully utilizes Subject Matter Experts in the other engineering disciplines to successfully complete projects.
  • Maintains close relationship with Operations, Process Engineering, Finance, Environmental, Purchasing, and Maintenance departments' personnel for efficient and economic project implementation.
  • Minimizes capital cost through design and selection of equipment and materials.
  • Assures design compliance with requirements of OxyChem, OSHA, EPA, and other governmental bodies. Applies sound engineering principles and most effective technology in designs.
  • Prepares or approves specifications, standards, engineering drawings, purchase requisitions, and purchase recommendations on assigned projects.
  • Plans and develops schedules on assigned projects and assists in planning and scheduling the overall project workload of the department.
  • Provides accurate cost estimates, spending projections and cost control on assigned projects.
  • Approves and authorizes capital and expense expenditures within limits of authority.
  • Prepares AFEs for assigned capital projects.
  • Coordinates information flow among other engineers, designers/drafters, and Chicago Plant staff and support personnel toward the efficient and complete implementation of assigned projects.
  • Represents the department and company in dealings with government agencies, engineering firms, commercial suppliers and businesses, and other individuals on engineering matters relating to assigned projects or other Chicago Plant related functions.
  • Maintains the development of professional skills required for project management and design.
  • Actively support and participate on teams or in programs to continuously improve plant operations.
The salary range for this position is:$ 109,200 - $ 150,150 Annual
