Title: Phlebotomist - Biomonitoring Unit

Location: Hybrid - Must Live and Work in the state of Michigan



Purpose: Working remotely and/or in the community in themobile lab RV, at "pop up" mobile lab and/or in-home setting. This position travels throughout the State of Michigan (50%), remote or in Lansing in a standard office environment (50%).



Duties and Responsibilities:

Phlebotomy duties (approximately 50% of the time)



  • Provide phlebotomy and administrative support for assigned biomonitoring surveillance, research and community/emergency response activity in our Mobile Lab, pop up labs or in-home setting.
  • Obtain a variety of specimens, primarily blood and urine, with the possibility of environmental samples with additional training.
  • Collect blood specimens using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
  • Document sample collection using electronic or hardcopy methods as required per protocol.
  • Log samples and related information in tracking systems and is responsible for proper labeling, packaging, and arranging biological and other specimens for transport or shipment.
  • Maintain appointment schedules, log participant intake information, collect samples and perform related clinical tasks.
  • Cross-trained to fill other duties in the field as necessary



Non-community work responsibilities (approximately 50% of the time)



  • Support participant management activities for recruitment and retention of participants. This includes taking or making inbound and outbound phone calls and mailing welcome packets and lab results along with other participant communications.
  • Document recruitment and retention activities in REDCap and other data entry programs.
  • Meet weekly with logistics and data teams to review participant recruitment and retention procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of data as required by state and federal laws.
  • Cross-trained to fill other support duties as necessary.
  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Education typically acquired through the completion of high school. Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program that includes an externship in a hospital or busy clinical laboratory setting.



Experience: No experience required. One year in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting is preferred.

Important Skills and Characteristics:



  • Working knowledge of the theory of phlebotomy, and venipuncture and capillary puncture methods.
  • Demonstrated skill in the application of venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
  • Strict adherence to infection control procedures.
  • Ability to collect a variety of specimens including blood and urine using appropriate methods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Self-motivated with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
  • Problem solving ability.
  • Basic understanding of data collection and data/information security.
  • Basic CPR and bloodborne pathogens training and certifications.
  • Proficient in and knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PPT).

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: This position includes weekly overnight travel within the state and involves working evenings and weekends. Physical requirements consistent with a standard clinic or lab environment. Regular evening and weekend hours will be required. Transport supplies to sites around the state. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. May go door-to-door to engage residents and may be exposed to cold, heat or wet weather conditions. Requires valid vehicle operator's license and frequent travel within the State, including overnights and some weekends. Less frequently, travel may be required outside of the State.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS.This position serves to support work within the Bureau of Environmental Health. The phlebotomist will work in cooperation with the program team(s) to ensure goals are achieved by assisting with participants and mobile lab operations. The person in this position interacts with the public on a regular basis at the mobile lab and internal staff via meetings, telephone conversations, and e-mails, responding to community health concerns and providing information to protect public health.
