The Quality Engineer I supports product and process quality across manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain activities. This role performs hands-on quality tasks including inspections, nonconformance documentation, basic root cause analysis, and compliance to AS9100, NAVSEA, and customer requirements. Working under the guidance of senior quality engineers, the QE I helps drive continuous improvement, supports MRB activities, analyzes quality data, and ensures products meet technical and contractual specifications. This is an entry-level engineering position requiring strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams in a regulated defense-manufacturing environment.

Quality Engineer II (H420) - Ultra Maritime Overview

The Ultra Assurance function ensures the effectiveness and fulfilment of Ultra Maritime's Quality Policy and contractual/regulatory requirements. The Quality Engineer II (QE II) is an early-career engineering professional responsible for providing quality engineering support across assigned products, processes, and suppliers. This role requires a hands-on, proactive individual who can work closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Procurement, and cross-functional teams to support compliance, improve processes, and drive Quality, Cost, and Delivery performance.

The ideal candidate is collaborative, adaptable, detail-oriented, and eager to develop as a technical quality professional within a regulated defense-industry environment.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Engineering Support

  • Perform in-process, final, and source inspection support as needed in accordance with technical data packages, drawings, and customer/contract requirements.

  • Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) activities under the guidance of senior QEs, including defect disposition, rework instructions, and documentation of nonconformances.

  • Support Supplier Quality and Receiving Inspection in evaluating incoming materials and communicating issues to Procurement and Engineering.

Process & Compliance

  • Assist in maintaining compliance with AS9100, ISO9001, NAVSEA requirements, and Ultra Maritime's internal procedures.

  • Help establish and maintain quality control processes and standard work instructions to ensure consistent product and process outcomes.

  • Support internal audits, audit preparation, and corrective action closure.

Data Analysis & Problem Solving

  • Collect, organize, and analyze quality metrics and inspection data to identify trends and potential risks.

  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) activities using standard tools (5-Why, Fishbone, Pareto, etc.).

  • Assist in developing quality reports, dashboards, and metrics for program and leadership reviews.

Continuous Improvement

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing and engineering teams.

  • Assist with process mapping, waste identification, defect reduction efforts, and quality improvement projects.

  • Participate in cross-functional meetings to address quality-related issues and support actions through closure.

Technical Support & Development

  • Maintain proficiency in industry standards such as J-STD-001, IPC-A-600/610, and other relevant workmanship or inspection standards.

  • Work with senior QEs to strengthen technical knowledge related to metrology, measurements, inspection methods, and configuration control.

  • Participate in training on quality engineering tools, problem-solving techniques, and evolving customer/regulatory requirements.

Desired Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field (or demonstrated equivalent hands-on experience).

  • 2+ years of experience in Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a regulated technical environment (defense, aerospace, medical, automotive, etc.).

  • Familiarity with quality management systems (AS9100/ISO9001) and basic understanding of regulatory/contractual compliance.

  • Exposure to quality tools and methodologies (RCA, CAPA, FMEA, SPC, etc.); formal training a plus.

  • Experience with mechanical or electrical inspection, metrology equipment, or reading technical drawings (GD&T preferred).

  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Detail-oriented and able to follow procedures with precision.

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable working with limited supervision as skills develop.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Production, Engineering, Procurement, and other cross-functional partners.

  • U.S. citizenship required due to defense contract obligations.

Typically, a Bachelor Degree (or equivalent) 2 years of related experience.

May be required to maintain security clearance
