Summary

Responsible for repairing and maintaining the operation of all vehicles and equipment for the Street Department.

Pay Range: $22 - $27 /hour depending on qualification and experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.

  • Diagnose and repair department vehicles and equipment.

  • Order required parts as needed.

  • Maintain a clean and orderly maintenance shop.

  • Respond to road calls.

  • Diagnose and repair vehicle hydraulic or electrical systems.

  • Ensure work quality on all vehicle repair and/or maintenance services.

  • Coordinate with vendors and the city's fleet department when procuring new heavy equipment and vehicles.

  • Maintaining equipment and vehicle inventory list.

  • Maintaining Message Boards (equipment).

  • Researching equipment and vehicle quotes as needed.

  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays to support special events, respond to natural disasters, critical incidents, and other emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 6 months to 1 year advanced study past the high school level

  • 3 years related experience

  • 1 ASE Certification

  • Must own basic hand and air tools

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • Advanced training in automotive and diesel mechanics

  • 3-5 years experience in auto and diesel repair and diagnosis

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General knowledge of automotive repair and diagnostics

  • General knowledge of fleet software processes

  • Skill in utilizing Shop Key software

  • Skill in performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment

  • Skill in prioritizing and meeting deadlines

  • Skill in hydraulic system repair

  • Skill in diagnosing vehicle repairs

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal

  • Skill in electric diagnostics

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must obtain 2 ASE Certifications within 1 year of hire

  • Valid Class A Texas Driver's License or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The incumbent works in a vehicle shop environment; occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Occasional outside work.
