Description Location: Varies (Travel Required) Department: Gas Distribution Employment Type: Full-time Job Summary A rig welder is a skilled tradesperson who joins, repairs, and maintains pipelines that transport natural gas. They use specialized techniques like stick welding to create strong, leak-free seams that meet strict safety and industry codes, working in the field or at construction sites. Their work is critical for the safe and efficient distribution of gas and requires knowledge of blueprints, safety standards, and various pipe fittings and connectors. Key Responsibilities
- Joining and repairing gas pipes, ensuring they are strong and leak-free.
- Adhering to strict safety regulations and industry codes, such as API 1104.
- Interpreting blueprints and specifications.
- Using tools to prepare workpieces and applying filler metal to create the weld bead.
- Working in various positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead.
- Maintaining equipment and assisting with all gas distribution activities.
Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum 2 years experience in the gas industry.
- Must pass 12" butt & branch 6010/8010 and in service LH rod - sleeve on 45 degree tests.
- Must be qualified and certified in handling, preparing, and joining PE pipe through mechanical, heat fusion, and/or electrofusion processes.
- Adherence and understanding of OQ requirements, which are specific to the tasks performed on their systems. These ensure the welder can safely and competently perform regulated tasks.
- Poly Pipe Fusion, using butt fusion and electrofusion joining systems, with certification validating the operator's proficiency.
- Carbon to Poly Pipe Connections specific knowledge and training are required for these critical transition joints, ensuring a reliable and safe connection between different materials.
- Understanding of underground utility locating practices and safety protocols.
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Valid driver/operator license required.
- Willingness to travel as required for job assignments.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork.
