Job Summary

The SRA performs a wide variety of routine laboratory procedures such as PCR, qPCR, tissue culture, microscopy and non-routine procedures in specialized areas with resourcefulness and adaptability to the changing needs of the lab. The lab focuses on Chlamydiae ocular and sexually transmitted diseases and zoonoses. Pathogenesis research in the lab involves host-pathogen interactions in relation to primary cell culture infections, genomics, metagenomic shotgun sequencing, dual RNA-sequencing, metabolomics and host immune responses. The SRA also works on detecting sexually transmitted pathogens (chlamydia and gonorrhea) in clinical samples as the lab has a collaboration with a start-up in the Bay Area to develop a rapid point-of-care test to detect Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This is an opportunity to grow and learn about basic and translational research that is clinically relevant. There are also opportunities to work on research projects with postdoctoral fellows and contribute intellectually in order to be an author on relevant publications coming out of the lab. The appointment is at the UCSF School of Medicine, East Bay MLK Campus at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

UCSF, Department of Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases & Global Health Division is involved in a variety of innovative research activities, including outcomes research, translational immunology, basic research in molecular pathogenesis and host-defense, as well as global health research in low-resource countries. We also have long-standing collaborations with scientists in other clinical and basic science departments at UCSF. The research is conducted on many aspects of chlamydial infections: the molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis of chlamydial STDs around the world, including Ecuadorian, Nepali and Vietnamese populations. The research on chlamydial STDs among adolescents will help to design appropriate interventions in this population. There is a collaboration with different biotech companies to develop a vaccine to prevent and ameliorate chlamydial related STDs among all age groups, to develop leading edge nanotechnology to study chlamydial disease pathogenesis, and to develop a readily deployable, cost effect and rapid-point-of-care test that can be used to screen for chlamydial infections not just in hospitals and clinical labs in developed countries but globally in inner city and rural clinics, and field sites worldwide.
