Inserso is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to support our DHS customer. This position provides Tier 2 operational and maintenance support of all databases under the Enterprise Services Support structure.
The DBA supports multiple technical teams and manages production databases across hybrid environments. These databases host enterprise Windows applications, including MECM, SCOM, BES12, ActiveRoles, Enterprise Vault, and other security tools.
The DBA is responsible for ensuring data integrity, implementing backups and restorations, developing maintenance plans, and implementing upgrades to existing databases and applications. The role includes monitoring and performance tuning, security compliance, and capacity management. As part of continuous improvement, the DBA will analyze error trends, report deviations, and validate corrective measures.
Responsibilities:
Database Operations and Maintenance:
- Administer Microsoft SQL Server databases in hybrid environments
- Maintain and update the database architecture, including upgrading and installing database software.
- Perform database backups, validate backup integrity, and conduct periodic restore tests
- Manage high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) configurations, including AlwaysOn Availability Groups, clustering, mirroring, and replication.
- Apply patches, cumulative updates, and service packs while minimizing downtime.
- Maintain database software installations and upgrades.
- Review and provide recommendations on planned OS or configuration changes to database servers to ensure service continuity and data protection.
Performance Capacity Management:
- Monitor database performance, tune queries, and optimize indexes.
- Conduct capacity planning and forecast resource requirements.
- Ensure 99% database availability (outside of scheduled downtime).
- Plan and forecast long-term database growth and resource requirements.
- Security and Compliance.
- Implement and maintain security controls, including Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) compliance and Information Assurance Vulnerability Alert (IAVA) mitigation actions.
- Secure sensitive data (PII) in alignment with DHS security requirements.
- Maintain security documentation and support audits.
Monitoring and Reporting:
- Configure and maintain monitoring systems for database health and performance.
- Analyze and report on error trends, deviations, and corrective actions.
- Prepare detailed reports that might include system requirements, storage needs, and response times using the database management systems (DBMS), including relational databases.
Collaboration and Support:
- Work closely with system administrators, application owners, and security teams.
- Interaction with senior management.
- Provide Tier 2 database troubleshooting and support.
- Participate in 24/7 on-call responsibilities.
Required Skills/Experience:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass the DHS Employment Eligibility Verification process.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent hands-on experience.
- 7 years of experience in IT support or related field, with at least 4 years administering Microsoft SQL Server (2016 or later) in enterprise environments.
- Demonstrated experience with SQL Server High Availability (HA and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions, including AlwaysOn Availability Groups and associated failover procedures.
- Microsoft certification in SQL Server administration (or equivalent experience).
- Proven experience designing, implementing, and maintaining complex databases with respect to access methods, access time, device allocation, validation checks, organization, protection and security, documentation, and statistical methods.
- Experience with automation/scripting (PowerShell, T-SQL, Python.
- Experience integrating monitoring tools.
- Experience with database security compliance frameworks (STIGs, IAVA, or equivalent).
- Knowledge and experience with database technologies, development methodologies, and front-end (e.g., COGNOS) / back-end programming languages (e.g., SQL).
Preferred Skills/Experience:
- Microsoft certification in database administration or cloud data platforms (e.g., DP-300: Administering Relational Databases on Microsoft Azure, legacy MCSA, or equivalent).
- Hands on experience with automation and scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash) for database tasks.
- Familiarity with cloud database deployments (Azure / AWS).
- Experience using ITSM ticketing systems, such as ServiceNow.
- Knowledge of monitoring and logging platforms.
- ITIL v4 certified.
- Experience with database integration into enterprise tools (e.g., reporting, data warehouse, or analytics platforms).
