The University of Texas at Austin's Planning, Design and Construction team seeks an individual to serve as a Technical Coatings Specialist in the Paint & Sign Shop. Purpose

Provide journey-level skills in the application of paints and special coatings to buildings, cabinetry, and equipment in support of campus facility renovation, maintenance, and repair projects. Assist in the fabrication and installation of interior and exterior signage and graphics, as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and apply various technical coatings, including paints, varnishes, stains, and epoxies to interior and exterior building surfaces and equipment utilizing brush, roller, or spray gun. Assist other shop trades personnel with project-related duties and in support of campus special events.
  • Clean, sand, and prime surfaces for paint and other finishes. Tape and float drywall; apply texture in preparation for painting.
  • Prepare and apply furniture-grade finishes to cabinetry and millwork using brush, roller, or spray gun as appropriate to meet project specifications.
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with drawings and specifications, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes, and regulations.
  • Participate in the operation and maintenance of Paint & Sign Shop, including clean and maintain shop space, tools, equipment, vehicles, and supplies.
  • Drive UT vehicle to deliver personnel, equipment, and materials to job sites. Accomplish basic shop paperwork and electronic documents, including records for materials used, daily labor reports, and weekly time reports. Additional duties include assisting the signage team, as needed.
  • Wear, maintain, and properly use personal protective equipment and other designated safety equipment to ensure personal, coworker, and client safety. Maintain a safe work environment in shop area and at job site.
  • Practice and promote the values and goals of the university and the department. Drive UT vehicle to visit job sites and purchase materials and equipment. Attend management-directed meetings and training. Accomplish other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Three years experience as a journey-level painter. Two years experience in application of technical coatings. Two years experience taping and floating sheetrock. Before final offer can be made, successful applicant must provide a current driver's license and acceptable driving record for the most recent 36 months. Texas driving history will be confirmed online during selection process; applicant must provide out-of-state driving history, if previously licensed in another state. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than three years journey-level experience with emphasis on interior renovations. Demonstrated ability to produce quality work from project drawings, specifications, construction standards, and/or written-verbal instructions with or without direct supervision. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with building clients, co-workers, and supervisors in a team environment. Experience working in a large university, commercial, or industrial physical plant.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$46,800 + depending on qualifications
