Assistant Director of Education Abroad & Away

The Assistant Director is a member of a dynamic team, collaborating with multiple campus units and partner organizations to provide off-campus study opportunities that foster international and intercultural learning for all students. Key responsibilities include managing application processes and outreach efforts, and helping to coordinate logistics for Davidson's off-campus study programs, including managing budgets and serving as a risk manager. Successful candidates will present astute judgement, sensitivity, attention to detail, and exceptional communication skills. Proficiency in using Terra Dotta or a similar records management system, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office is essential; knowledge of basic website and graphic design strongly preferred.

Responsibilities



  • Work with the Director, faculty leaders of study abroad programs, Controller's Office, providers, students, and others to coordinate budgets and grant disbursals, track purchases, and reconcile expenses for study abroad programs.
  • Design and implement updates for education abroad and off-campus studies application system and student application requirements. Maintain off-campus and study abroad statistics, and generate and analyze data, providing reports as needed.
  • Oversee all college web page information and outreach information related to education abroad and study away opportunities. Monitor international education reference and resource materials.
  • Review risks abroad and serve as a member of the risk management team to assess and respond to emergency situations.
  • Liaise with provider study abroad organizations regarding student issues while students are applying to programs, while they are abroad, and post-travel. Answer inquiries from students, parents, faculty, and staff pertaining to off campus study programs. Write recommendations and provide home campus approval forms for students applying to partner programs.
  • Co-design and implement educational pre-departure and reentry sessions and resources for students studying off-campus.
  • Coordinate, advertise, and host campus visits for partner organization representatives.
  • Advise students in selecting programs that will meet their academic goals, interests, and special needs. Analyze program materials, network with colleagues from other institutions, and participate in site visits and discussions determining the suitability of off-campus programs for the college's approval.
  • Help ensure adherence to program policies. Execute decisions for the Office of Education Abroad & Away and supervise office staff as needed in the absence of the Director.


Minimum Required Education, Skills, & Experience



  • Bachelor's degree
  • Four or more years professional experience in the field of education abroad
  • Professional experience in a higher education environment working with faculty, staff, and undergraduate students of diverse backgrounds
  • Minimum of one year professional experience working with expense tracking and budget management
  • Previous experience studying abroad; personal experience with and enthusiasm for international education
  • Knowledge of standards of good practice for education abroad
  • Highly organized with demonstrated reliability, attention to accuracy and detail, problem-solving, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work well with others
  • Proven ability to exercise sound and independent judgment while working under general supervision
  • Ability to collaborate closely on policy decisions and handle sensitive matters with tact and discretion
  • Experience using Terra Dotta software or similar record management systems
  • Strong computer literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and database management systems


Preferred Education, Skills, & Experience



  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Five or more years professional experience in the field of education abroad; familiarity and experience with U.S. study abroad program providers and faculty-led programs
  • Two or more years working with expense tracking and budget management
  • Experience living, working, traveling, and studying abroad
  • Proficiency in a foreign language
  • Proven experience in risk management; knowledge of best practices for health, safety, and security in education abroad
  • Knowledge of basic website and graphic design
  • Interest in and experience with creating marketing materials using platforms such as Canva
  • Experience with Instagram and other forms of social media
  • Active involvement in professional associations related to education abroad; demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying informed about field.
