Overview
The Firefighter performs both Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting and facility fire prevention/safety duties.
Responsibilities
Perform duties of ARFF firefighter responding to helipad stand-bys, aircraft emergencies and other flight line mishaps
- Assists with emergencies or incidents involving aircraft as assigned; performs tasks associated with aircraft crises to include extrication and rescue, fire extinguishment, first responder medical assistance, spilled fuel containment, runway preparation, and wreckage removal
- Respond to on-site building fires, medical calls, and other emergency situations, hazardous materials incidents and other emergency situations within the West facility and grounds
- Provide control of fire situation to include suppression and extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue of victims, salvage and overhaul
- Locates water source; lays and connects hose, acts as nozzle or backup person in the direction of water streams, uses chemical fire extinguishers, and raises and climbs ladders
- Selects and properly operates fire service tools and equipment to include fire hoses, nozzles, appliances, and the components of sprinkler and standpipe systems
- Prepares, inspects, inventories, repairs, and/or maintains fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, materials, turnout gear, first aid equipment, and vehicles for safe operation; tests equipment on a regular basis
- Drive and operate emergency response vehicles
- Conducts and participates in department training, safety inspections, mishap drills
- Monitors and communicates effectively and coherently over radio channels; exchanges information with dispatchers, medical professionals, and other department employees
- Assists in the conduction of familiarization surveys, building inspections and notifies concerned parties of fire hazards; prepares pre-fire plans including layout of building and hydrant locations; checks fire hydrants for proper function
- Conducts fire prevention inspections; examines interiors and exteriors of buildings to detect hazardous conditions or violations of fire ordinances and laws; conducts investigations and examinations of structure fires and fire scenes; submits reports and findings as necessary
- Perform inspections and preventive maintenance on fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, AED stations, RMT2000 and RMT4000 fire suppression systems
- Conduct special projects and complete tasks as assigned, including aircraft fueling/defueling procedures and tasks assigned during 2nd shift
Qualifications
Education:
- HS Diploma or equivalent; AS/BS/BA a plus
Experience:
- One to three years' experience
- Firefighter I/II credentials with Hazmat AO, Airport Firefighter, EMT-B required
- Additional training/certifications a plus
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance if/when required
Physical Requirements: Works in well-lighted, climate-controlled facility. May work in hazardous working conditions, near flight lines; some assignments are within an uncontrolled climate facility. Must be able to see with corrective eye wear and hear clearly with assistance. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, or crouch, often in confined spaces. The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Expected to handle/manage hazardous materials/waste in accordance with regulatory and industrial standards. Wears/maintains personal protective equipment for eyes, face, head, hearing, extremities, respiratory devices, protective shields and barriers as required.
