General Notes

Provides day-to-day support for desktops, laptops, and other endpoints in the Department of Computer Science, with responsibility for macOS system management and a strong emphasis on in-person user support. Uses Jamf to manage Apple devices and contributes to lab, AV, inventory, audit, and facilities support. Provides backup technical support for Windows and Linux systems in coordination with platform specialists.

Must be eligible to work in the US on a full-time basis for any employer.

Purpose

We are seeking a hands-on, Mac-focused IT Support and Operations Specialist to join the Department of Computer Science at The University of Texas at Austin. You'll serve as a key point of contact for in-person desktop and laptop support, especially for Apple/macOS systems, while managing configuration, security, and software deployments for macOS endpoints using Jamf.You'll also assist with classroom AV setups, meetings, seminars, and departmental events, as well as lab and facilities operations. The role includes support for the department's yearly physical inventory audit and coordination during annual university information security assessments. This position is part of a collaborative IT operations team serving a dynamic academic and research environment.

Responsibilities

Endpoint & User Support

  • Uphold a high standard of customer service through professional, user-focused communication.

  • Provide in-person, first-level IT support for faculty, staff, students, and guests.

  • Review and prioritize incoming support requests to ensure timely response, resolution, and follow-up. Escalate when necessary to maintain service levels.

  • Troubleshoot endpoint issues across desktops, laptops, peripherals, and applications, with the ability to support macOS, Linux, and Windows environments.

  • Maintain adaptability to emerging platforms-including mobile, ChromeOS, and others-with a commitment to continual learning.

macOS Endpoint Management

  • Manage configuration, deployment, and maintenance of Apple devices using Jamf in alignment with university security standards.

  • Administer software deployments, apply security and policy updates, and monitor compliance through Jamf-managed workflows.

  • Provide lifecycle support for macOS systems, including initial setup, troubleshooting, upgrades, and secure decommissioning.

Operational Support & Onboarding

  • Perform and coordinate physical tasks such as workstation moves, equipment delivery, furniture rearrangement, and general relocation or setup duties for events, office changes, or departmental operations.

  • Assist with general building operations as part of the department's "Shop" team, including submitting facilities work orders and supporting room readiness and repairs.

  • Support onboarding and offboarding by provisioning and reclaiming access, preparing workspaces, and ensuring proper equipment handoff and documentation.

Inventory & Audit Coordination

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory records for departmental endpoint devices and peripherals.

  • Lead or support the department's annual physical inventory process, including device scanning, tracking, and user verification.

  • Coordinate departmental contributions to the university's annual information security audit, including data gathering and documentation.

Event & AV Support

  • Set up, test, and operate AV equipment for classrooms, seminars, meetings, and departmental events.

  • Troubleshoot issues with projectors, microphones, cameras, and recording tools during instructional and event activities.

  • Coordinate with faculty and staff to ensure AV systems are functional and meet presentation needs.

Team Participation & Process Support

  • Develop and maintain internal documentation, FAQs, and procedures to support knowledge sharing and consistent service delivery.

  • Collaborate with Linux and Windows platform specialists to provide backup support and resolve cross-platform issues.

  • Participate in team meetings, IT projects, cross-functional efforts, and departmental initiatives as assigned.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • 1-3 years of IT support experience with strong macOS expertise.

  • Experience managing Apple systems using Jamf or similar endpoint management tools.

  • Demonstrated success providing professional, in-person end-user support.

  • Familiarity with Windows and Linux platforms and willingness to provide backup support for both.

  • Experience with asset tracking, IT audits, or compliance documentation.

  • Basic knowledge of networking, hardware troubleshooting, and AV equipment.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with excellent communication skills.

  • Physically able to lift equipment (up to 50 lbs) and move between buildings for in-person support needs.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Experience supporting AV systems and instructional or research environments.

  • Familiarity with UT Austin's inventory systems (e.g., UT Inventory Portal) and annual equipment verification processes.

  • Experience supporting or coordinating information security audits or compliance reviews.

  • Proficiency in Jamf, Windows Active Directory, or Linux systems administration.

  • Certifications such as ACSP, Jamf 200+, CompTIA A+/Security+, or similar.

Salary Range

$60,000+ depending on qualifications

Working Conditions
  • Frequent in-person interaction and movement across campus buildings.

  • Combination of office-based and physically active tasks, including equipment setup and support.

  • Occasional evening or weekend hours to support events or resolve urgent issues.

  • Frequent use of a keyboard, along with lifting, moving, and installing equipment and furniture (up to 50 lbs). Includes navigating stairs and ladders as part of routine support and setup duties.
