The Technical Director of Clinical Chemistry at Inova Health System provides clinical consultations, oversees test result interpretations, and ensures quality across all phases of Clinical Chemistry testing. The role includes developing staff training programs, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards (JCAHO, CLIA, CAP), and collaborating with leadership to guide technical and scientific operations. Responsibilities also include method validation, quality control, and policy management.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversees assigned department or functional area to ensure it is performing effectively, which may include but not limited to, preparing and implementing business strategy to achieve the organization's goals, ensuring legal compliance, communicating and collaborating with stakeholders, managing employment decisions and contributions of supporting team members, and managing departmental budget and fiscal success.
- Leads the Chemistry Clinical Practice Team, driving standardization of test methods and instrumentation across Inova Laboratories.
- Collaborates with physicians, lab staff, vendors, and reference labs on test interpretation and implementation of new methods. Evaluates and recommends diagnostic technologies and oversees related financial and technical analyses.
- Develops and delivers educational programs for MLS students, residents, and staff; supervises student projects and staff competency evaluations.
- Monitors quality control and proficiency testing, identifies trends, and implements corrective actions to improve patient care.
- Supports accreditation readiness through CAP inspections and regulatory compliance.
- Provides strategic oversight of workflow, facilities, and test portfolios, including long-term planning for test menu evolution. Assesses reference lab utilization and recommends in-house testing opportunities.
- Manages team operations, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, and problem-solving.
- Maintains expertise in Clinical Chemistry to support staff and ensure best practices in test utilization and result interpretation.
Minimum Requirements:
Certification - Eligible for certification by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry Experience - 4 years of laboratory experience with 2 of the 4 years in a healthcare system; 4 years of lab supervisory experience Education - Doctorate PhD in clinical chemistry or fellowship in clinical chemistry.
