An Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology (Physics) will support the medical physics operations within CUMC's Department of Radiation Oncology, participating in the day-to-day activities of the therapeutic medical physics group. This faculty member shall also support (1) the development and implementation of new treatment methods and technology; (2) academic activities of medical physics trainees and junior faculty; and (3) collaboration with teams providing oversight of the Department's radiation safety program. Specific clinical physicist duties include, but are not limited to, chart checking, machine calibrations, and quality assurance. All medical physicists are responsible for the precise and accurate delivery of radiation treatment plans, as well as ensuring the safety of patients and treatment staff. For clinical matters, medical physics faculty shall report to the Director of Clinical Medical Physics with overall governance of the group overseen by the Department's Vice Chairperson for Physics.

Responsibilities

Area: Medical Physics

* Determines the requirements for, selects or participates in the selection of dosimetric and treatment planning equipment, including, but not limited to, measurement instruments to calibrate all treatment equipment and monitoring devices, treatment planning systems, water phantom systems with appropriate ionization chambers and diodes, film densitometry systems, etc.

* Responsible for executing all aspects of the physics quality management program that involves the use of the radiation-producing equipment. Participates as needed in yearly quality assurance program, including annual and monthly linear accelerator, simulator, and CT calibrations and QA. Ensures equipment is maintained within performance criteria.

* Advises and consults with physicians to provide guidance and direction to physics, treatment planning, and therapy staff during patient planning and treatment.

* Ensures all required documentation relating to treatment plans, equipment, and compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies is completed promptly.

* Participates in all physics procedures as needed, including QA procedures, brachytherapy procedures, SRS procedures, etc.

* As appropriate, consults with physicians regarding brachytherapy treatments, treatment setups, and clinical problems as needed or requested, and documents the consultation in the medical record.

* Ensures all regular weekly QA checks for all patients under treatment are performed.

* Participates as needed in the acceptance and commissioning of new equipment, ensuring the completion of appropriate documentation.

Area: Administration

* Develops policies and procedures as assigned, reviews/revises annually by indicated deadlines, and distributes to/reviews with department personnel.

* Supports accreditation and intra-departmental credentialing program efforts.

* Develops and monitors quality indicators as directed.

Area: Educational

* Responsible for supporting trainee programs, designed in conjunction with faculty, for the clinical instruction of students. This includes oversight of student activities within the clinic, participation in research projects, and didactic instruction as time permits.

Minimum Qualifications

* Graduate of a Doctoral or Master of Arts program in medical physics.

* ABR or ABMP certification (or eligible) in therapeutic radiological physics.

* Qualified to be licensed in the State of New York as a Therapeutic Radiological Medical Physicist

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

* Interest in or experience in therapeutic medical physics research.

* Residency or working experience at an academic radiation oncology program.

Working conditions/physical demands

* Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
