Daikin Applied is seeking a Principal 1D Modeling and Simulation Engineer to lead the development and strategic integration of advanced steady-state system level modeling capabilities across multiple commercial HVAC platforms. This individual will serve as a subject matter expert and technical leader, advancing the use of 1D modeling techniques to drive innovation, improve product performance, and reduce development cycle time. The ideal candidate is a recognized authority in their domain with a demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical efforts, influence engineering strategy, and mentor others. Location: Plymouth, MN - Hybrid

What you will do:



  • Lead the development and implementation of 1D system models for various HVAC applications, including but not limited to fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Use advanced simulation tools and methods to analyze system behavior and performance of:

    • Generic vapor compression refrigeration systems
    • Different types of heat exchangers e.g. air-refrigeration fin/tube and microchannel
    • Water-source and air-source heat pumps
    • Chiller plants and centrifugal compressors in both steady-state and transient modes
    • Energy recovery systems: heat wheels, air-to-air heat exchangers


  • Guide the creation of scalable, modular models that support design trade studies, control development, and optimization across multiple product families
  • Develop calibration frameworks and validation strategies using physical test data; lead correlation efforts with the test lab
  • Build and automate performance map tools and reduced-order models to support digital twins, virtual testing, and product development acceleration
  • Drive continuous improvement of modeling methodologies and processes across the organization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, test, controls, and product teams to define system requirements and ensure modeling accuracy and business relevance
  • Serve as a technical mentor to other engineers and champion simulation best practices and model reuse
  • Represent the MBE function in strategic initiatives, research collaborations, vendor engagements, and cross-BU technical reviews
  • Contribute to setting modeling technology roadmaps and align simulation capabilities with business strategy
  • Communicate technical insights to senior engineering leadership and advocate for model-based engineering adoption

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's or Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
  • 10+ years of proven experience in 1D modelling and simulation, with a strong understanding of relevant tools and techniques
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer fundamentals
  • Experience with modeling and design of experiments (DOE)
  • Familiarity with commercial HVAC equipment
  • Proficiency in simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink, Modelon Impact, GT-Suite, Dymola, VapCyc, CoilDesigner, Simscape, Amesim, or similar tools
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly and effectively
  • Work visa sponsorship is not available for this position


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree or Ph.D. preferred
  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., FORTRAN, Python, C++, Modelica, EES) for toolchain integration and process automation
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary modeling, systems integration, and digital twin development
  • Proven ability to drive innovation and process improvement through modeling and simulation
  • Familiarity with model verification, validation (V&V), and uncertainty quantification (UQ) practices
  • Background in project management or experience leading simulation efforts across multiple product platforms or business units

The typical annual base salary for this position ranges from $130,400-$219,100 + 25% bonus in Minnesota. The range displayed represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade which this position falls. Individual base pay will depend on a wide range of factors including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
