Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Academic Technology and working closely with the Sr. A/V Systems Engineer, the A/V Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and support of complex media and videoconferencing systems, including A/V and/or IT support and maintenance of identified technology in a variety of facilities and learning spaces. This position will participate in the training of faculty, staff, and students in these spaces, and will both develop and upkeep documentation on the appropriate use of and maintenance of technologies associated with these facilities. This position will be located both downtown at Abbott Hall and on the Evanston campus.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Supports all School of Communication facilities, as well as classroom and research lab systems including:
  • Diagnostic maintenance of systems
  • Classroom equipment such as matrix switchers, control systems, cameras, monitors, Crestron panels, computers, etc.
  • Multimedia laboratory equipment including recorders, microphones, cameras, etc.
  • Production and post-production computer laboratories and media equipment.
  • Participates in the planning, design, and daily monitoring of multi-facility technologies and classroom systems, developing strategies and processes to better serve our faculty and support our team.
  • Participates in the review of project specifications including layouts, workflows, and interfaces, with academic technology team and vendors/contractors; works closely with vendors on project implementations, and certifies functionality.
  • Works in conjunction with desktop support as a point person for Abbott Hall.
  • Maintains an in-depth knowledge of media production and an educated awareness of evolving information and interactive teaching and learning technologies through professional publications, outside contacts, and ongoing professional development.
  • Develops and maintains documentation for all classrooms, conference rooms, research laboratories, or similar facilities containing A/V equipment.
  • Supports live events for the Dean's Office as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • A bachelor's degree in media design, production, or engineering, OR the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • Five years related professional experience.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Demonstrated success supporting A/V systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex classroom systems and active learning environments.
  • Experience with visual communications involving media streaming and video conferencing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining focus and prioritization.
  • Outstanding customer-service orientation.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • 7-10 years related experience.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience in A/V system design and management.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Project management
  • Ability to work directly with venders
  • Ability to translate complicated technical terms to end-users.
  • Ability to maintain respectful and effective working relationships with a variety of parties across Northwestern.
  • Ability to maintain focus on the highest priorities in the face of competing demands.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $72,339- $81,874 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
