DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health Sciences encompasses UC San Diego Health, the region's only academic health system, UC San Diego School of Medicine, one of the nation's top research-intensive medical schools, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southern California's first public school of pharmacy, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. UC San Diego Health Sciences' mission is to deliver outstanding patient care through commitment to the community, groundbreaking research and inspired teaching.

The division of Medical Education within the UC San Diego School of Medicine consists of the following units: Undergraduate Medical Education, Admissions & Student Affairs, Diversity and Community Partnerships, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education & Faculty Development, Simulation Education, Physician Assistant Education, Anatomical Services, Business Affairs and Educational Technology. The division supports the education, training and co-curricular activities of approximately 560 medical students, 90 physician assistant students, 1000 residents and fellows as well as the faculty, physician and healthcare providers at UCSD's School of Medicine, its' Medical Centers, and affiliates.

The Core Instructional Specialist is responsible for the planning, delivery, and evaluation of instructional content and educational experiences within the PAE program. This includes contributing to curriculum design and implementation, teaching and facilitating learning activities across multiple content areas, advising and mentoring learners, and engaging in scholarly and service activities that support the program's mission. The instructional specialist applies a broad knowledge of physician assistant education and institutional policies to support academic operations, which may include course coordination, learner assessment, instructional scheduling, and participation in program evaluation and accreditation processes.

This role also involves engagement with external clinical partners, including travel to recruit and evaluate clinical sites and preceptors. The instructional specialist is responsible for developing and maintaining positive relationships with clinical partners, supporting preceptor development, and ensuring alignment of clinical experiences with program learning outcomes and accreditation standards.

In addition, the instructional specialist may participate in the design, delivery, and assessment of simulation-based learning, team-based learning, and inter-professional education activities. Specialists contribute to continuous quality improvement efforts and assist with strategic planning for program enhancement. Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

  • Thorough knowledge of the subject matter and field.

  • Highly skilled with the development and delivery of clinical instruction or health education programs and services.

  • Thorough knowledge of the program design and delivery.

  • Highly effective interpersonal skills to lead diverse student / learner groups.

  • Effective organizational skills.

  • Highly effective communication skills.

  • Ability to evaluate and assesses instruction based on defined success indicators.

  • Online/distance learning experience.

  • Experience using an online course management system

  • Advanced knowledge of a Physician Assistant education program curriculum and requirements.

  • Knowledge and experience with Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant current standards.
