Description
Summary: Under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Nurse Intern UIW (University of the Incarnate Word) provides high-quality, direct patient care while developing essential clinical skills. This role serves as an enhanced clinical support position focused on assisting RNs with patient care activities that align with the intern's nursing education and scope of practice. The Nurse Intern performs essential patient care tasks, collaborates with the healthcare team, and enhances their hands-on nursing experience within a structured, supervised environment. Responsibilities:
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Identify and report life-threatening situations to the RN and initiate basic life support when needed.
- Observe, document, and report abnormal vital signs, skin integrity issues, and any changes in patient condition to the RN promptly.
- Assist with patient mobility, repositioning, and activities of daily living such as feeding, dressing, and hygiene care.
- Collect and transport laboratory specimens per hospital protocols.
- Maintain aseptic and sterile techniques when assisting with procedures and patient care.
- Follow universal precautions and infection control protocols.
- Provide comfort measures such as bed making, ambulation assistance, and support during diagnostic tests.
- Participate in department meetings, required training, and in-service programs.
- Assist with transporting patients and equipment as needed.
- Function within the intern's educational scope of practice, avoiding any independent clinical decision-making beyond their competency level.
- Uses supplies and equipment appropriately, documents use in the medical record, and records charges appropriately.
- Participates in prescribed in-service programs and departmental meetings.
- Follows hospital and/or unit policy for dress and personal hygiene.
- Follows necessary safety precautions, hospital policies, and departmental policies.
- Document care provided according to hospital policy.
- Completes all required educational requirements.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively within a healthcare team.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and patient care procedures
Job Requirements: Education/Skills
- Must be in the final semester of an accredited School of Nursing with whom CHRISTUS Health has executed an affiliation agreement.
Experience
- Prior healthcare experience preferred (e.g., CNA, Patient Care Technician, or Medical Assistant experience)
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required
