Job Description
Southwest Virginia Community College ( SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate's degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate's degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking qualified adjunct faculty to teach in our Sports Management curriculum, with specific teaching needs in:


  • Sports Entertainment and Recreation, and
  • Fiscal Planning and Management in Sport and Recreation

Adjunct faculty are responsible for providing high-quality instruction, fostering student success, and maintaining professional standards in the classroom. Teaching assignments may include day, evening, or online classes depending on departmental needs.

Course Topics May Include:

  • Structure and economics of the sports entertainment industry
  • Planning and managing recreational events and venues
  • Revenue generation, sponsorship, and budgeting for sport and recreation organizations
  • Financial decision-making in nonprofit and commercial sport sectors
  • Application of fiscal tools (budgets, forecasts, profit/loss) in sport environments

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging and effective instruction in assigned course(s)
  • Maintain accurate student records including attendance, grades, and communications
  • Follow established course outcomes and assessment standards
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with students and program leadership
  • Adhere to departmental, college, and VCCS policies and procedures
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment

Other responsibilities include participation in the following: achievement of the College's mission and goals; upholding the College's values; and personal and program evaluation.

Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom environment to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences.

Instructional faculty must reside in the state of Virginia or be available to teach in-person classes at one of the Southwest Virginia Community College ( SWCC) locations (Main Campus, Lebanon, Bluefield, Southern Gap).
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
Bachelor's or Associate degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Athletic Administration, Business, Hospitality, or a related field
2-5 years of relevant professional experience in:

  • Sports facility/event management
  • Recreation administration
  • Fiscal or budget planning in sport or nonprofit organizations


Additional Considerations
Experience teaching at the college level, particularly in community college settings
Industry experience in:

  • Event and facility management
  • Budget planning or fiscal oversight in sport/recreation organizations
  • Sports marketing or entertainment


Knowledge of emerging trends in sports and recreation, including digital fan engagement and esports

Experience teaching in online, hybrid, or HyFlex formats

Familiarity with Canvas or similar Learning Management Systems ( LMS)
