Summary

The Cold Brew Product Development Specialist is responsible for leading the research, formulation, testing, and launch of new cold brew coffee products. This role requires deep knowledge of coffee science, food and beverage formulation, and a strong sense of market trends and consumer preferences. This position plays a critical role in shaping the future of our cold brew lineup, working from concept to commercialization to ensure our offerings are both innovative and viable.

Essential Functions
  • Create formulas with appropriate written batching procedures created with input from Director of Product Development & Cold Brew and Product team members.

  • Modify and improve existing products and procedures as directed, keeping product quality and plant efficiencies in mind. Design and optimize cold brew extraction processes for flavor consistency, efficiency and scalability.

  • Investigate technologies and equipment that could improve production efficiency, scalability, or quality; prepare summaries and vendor comparisons for team review.

  • Conduct sensory evaluations, shelf-life testing, and ingredient compatibility trials.

  • Maintain lab equipment, troubleshoot with vendor as needed

  • Source and evaluate raw materials, ingredients, and packaging solutions in collaboration with operations and product teams.

  • Coordinate product and processing implementation at Stumptown and with co-packers.

  • Ensure all formulations meet food safety, labeling, and regulatory standards.

  • Maintain detailed records of formulations, test results, and project progress.

  • Provide cost information for assigned new products, formulation changes, and processing steps.

  • Explore new opportunities for the Cold Brew waste stream

  • Facilitate and lead meetings as required including communicating pre-meeting discussion topics and post-meeting notes.

  • Attend seminars and trade shows as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science or related field, and/or a combination of education and equivalent years of experience strongly preferred.

  • At least 3 years of experience in a similar position and in a food processing environment is required.

  • A strong understanding of mix and blend equipment and their raw ingredient processing capabilities is beneficial.

  • Knowledge of food safety standards and FDA regulations.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and maintain a positive, professional attitude at all times.

  • Strong operational and mechanical skill base.

  • Creativity and problem analysis skills with ability to "think outside the box".

  • Proficient in MS Office.

  • Strong interpersonal verbal communication and written communication skills.

  • Advanced math skills.

  • Self-directed with ability to work effectively under pressure and stress.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit continuously at a computer.

  • Carry weight, lift - lift up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.

  • Taste/Smell - ability to detect and perceive the smell of coffee.

  • Standing - ability to stand for long periods.

Work Environment
  • Work is performed during the day in a lab or production environment, with some off-shift work time required. Some overtime and travel may be required.

  • Temperature will vary with seasons.
